‚A fair draw‘

A thrilling match on Saturday evening ended in a draw: FC Schalke 04 and Darmstadt 98 played to a stalemate, each securing a point on matchday 27. The game was overshadowed by a potentially serious injury to Luca Marseiler. Following the match, both sides expressed their best wishes for the winger's recovery. The coaches' analysis of the game was similar: a fair draw. Here are the post-match reactions.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„It was an incredibly tough first half for us because Schalke played superbly. The Schalke team knows exactly what they want. They are incredibly difficult to defend against, combined with their individual quality. Nevertheless, it was a decent to good footballing performance from us in a top match. Both teams gave their all. Emotionally, it was an outstanding performance from us. There were many points where we could have crumbled – a disallowed goal, a serious injury, falling behind. But we stayed in it. Ultimately, it’s a fair draw. But it’s a match between two teams that both have their ideas and execute them, and both possess tremendous energy. For me as a coach, it was a very enjoyable top match with one major disappointment.“

… about Luca Marseiler:

“Our thoughts are with Luca. This was a brutal moment for us. There were even tears in some eyes on the pitch. Luca is an incredibly popular player within the team. He has developed into a game-changer in the second division. His departure is very hard on everyone. We are with you, Luca!”

Miron Muslic:

„It’s a good point for us. We knew about Darmstadt’s quality, especially here at home. We did well in the first half. It’s not easy to keep Darmstadt away from your goal as much as we did when they were playing open football. They have exceptional quality, especially on set pieces. It’s also difficult to defend against their power and structure. In the second half, it was a game that could have gone either way. Many teams would have lost here against Darmstadt’s power in the second half. But overall, the 1-1 draw is absolutely fair. Both teams deserved it. I’m extremely satisfied with our performance.“

… about Luca Marseiler:

“The injury to Luca Marseiler was a shock for all of us who love this wonderful sport. It looked brutal. We wish him all the best.”

Marco Richter:

„We saw a top-class match here. For us, it’s a point gained. Even though my gut feeling tells me there could have been more in it today. But Schalke aren’t at the top of the table for nothing. We’ll take the point. Overall, we didn’t get off to a good start. But the longer the game went on, the better we played. We were a touch better in the second half. Going forward, we should have been more clinical in the final third. In the end, we had a lot of crosses, a lot of switches of play, and a lot of attacking moves. But there were chances on both sides. So, the point is okay.“

… on Luca Marseiler’s injury:

„We’re all hoping for the best for him. Each of us hopes he can get back on the pitch soon. It’s not easy when a teammate has to be stretchered off. We had to shake it off for a bit, but we kept pushing and played for him.“

Kai Klefisch:

„It was important that we remained unbeaten at the Bölle. In the end, it’s a fair draw. We didn’t get off to a good start in the first half. We knew that Schalke played their set pieces that way. Therefore, we shouldn’t have conceded that goal. But what has characterized us this season is that we don’t give up. We came back again today – and against a good Schalke team that’s difficult to play against. That’s why we can be satisfied and proud of ourselves.“

… about Luca Marseiler:

„It’s incredibly bitter. It was a shock for us. But afterwards, we said that we’re playing for Luca. We’re all sticking together.“

It's widely known that Pep Guardiola introduced tiki-taka football to the Bundesliga during his time at Bayern Munich. Many top clubs adopted this captivating short-passing style of play, which had been developed over many years by numerous coaches in Barcelona. However, Guardiola wasn't quite the first in Germany to bring this style of play to the league. Over 90 years ago, it was the team from Gelsenkirchen that laid the foundations for tiki-taka in Germany – albeit under a different name.
