A Point Earned in Saarland

SV 98 earned a well-deserved point against the extremely strong home side SV Elversberg. After 14 matchdays, the Lilies sit in fifth place in the table with 26 points.

Darmstadt started the match against SV Elversberg well, creating two promising opportunities in the opening minutes. After four minutes, Killian Corredor got a shot away after a one-two with Sergio López, but his effort was cleared off the line at the last moment by a defender. Just two minutes later, López set up another chance: the Spaniard slipped the ball through to Isac Lidberg, whose low shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Kristof in the hosts‘ goal.

After a dominant opening phase by the South Hessians, the game became much more balanced in the following minutes. However, Darmstadt remained solid defensively and allowed the Saarlanders few scoring opportunities. After 23 minutes, Marcel Schuhen was called into action for the first time, parrying a powerful shot from Ebnoutalib. Three minutes later, Darmstadt threatened from a set piece: Fabian Nürnberger played the ball to Lidberg, whose shot on the turn was also saved by the keeper. The game then picked up pace even further, with both teams creating promising chances – first, Corredor was denied a shot at the last moment on 29 minutes, and shortly afterwards, Elversberg’s Petkov and Ebnoutalib both came close to scoring within the space of minute. After 38 minutes, Darmstadt were forced to make their first substitution. Fraser Hornby left the field injured, and Marco Richter replaced the Scot.

Even after the substitution, the game remained fast-paced, though without a multitude of clear scoring opportunities. It wasn’t until just before halftime that things got dangerous after an Elversberg corner, but Richter headed the ball off the line a minute before the break. Thus, the first half ended goalless.

After the break, two corner kicks initially caused some danger. First, a header from Lidberg bounced just wide of the goal, seven minutes into the half. Shortly afterward, Aleksandar Vukotic headed Pinckert’s effort off the line just before the hour mark.

Both teams continued to be well-organised defensively, so there were few dangerous moments in the second half. In the 68th minute, the home side combined well to penetrate the penalty area, but Petkov’s shot lacked precision and Schuhen had no trouble dealing with it. Two minutes later, Patric Pfeiffer tried his luck from distance, and his slightly deflected effort forced Kristof into a brilliant save.

In the final minutes, Elversberg initially exerted some pressure, and in the 80th minute, Ebnoutalib had a good chance to make it 1-0, but he put the ball wide. Shortly afterward, Nürnberger again created danger for Darmstadt, but his shot from a corner flew over the crossbar. A minute before the end of the match, Corredor had another chance with a header, but his effort went just wide of the post. The game thus ended in a goalless draw against the strong home side from Saarland.
