A Point in the Capital
The Lilies snatched a point from a strong Berlin side: SV 98 drew 1-1 (0-0) with Hertha BSC. Lidberg scored shortly after the restart, and an own goal sealed the final score.
The Lilies began their away game in the capital with plenty of possession. The visitors patiently moved the ball through their own ranks, but initially couldn’t find any gaps and couldn’t get any shots on goal. It wasn’t until the 19th minute that things really got dangerous for the first time – and really dangerous: After a corner, the ball fell to Isac Lidberg. Under pressure, the Swede shot but was thwarted by Ernst in the Hertha goal. Two minutes later, things also got dangerous at the other end when Reese’s cross slipped towards the goal. Marcel Schuhen, however, tipped the ball over the crossbar.
In the 27th minute, the 98ers had to endure a brief scare when Demme flicked the ball over the line following a corner. The linesman’s flag was raised immediately, and the goal was disallowed due to the goalscorer being offside. Overall, however, the match continued to lack highlights.
Five minutes before halftime, a corner also threatened in front of the Berlin goal: Aleksandar Vukotic headed a cross from Sergio López just wide of the post. Shortly thereafter, the teams went to the dressing room with a scoreless scoreless game.
The first highlight didn’t take long after the break. The South Hesse side took the lead after just three minutes of the half: Fabian Nürnberger shot from distance, but Ernst only let the ball bounce off the post, and Lidberg was there to score his 13th goal of the season.
The hosts subsequently attempted to do more to advance their own attack. However, the Lilies‘ defence was alert, winning almost all duels and barely allowing the Berlin side to create any dangerous opportunities. It wasn’t until just over an hour later that the home side finally found a gap – and promptly equalised with an own goal from Vukotic, who put into his own net while cutting out a cross on 62 minutes. The 98ers tried to respond quickly, but Nürnberger’s next long-range shot flew well wide three minutes later.
The next good opportunity also belonged to the visitors: Guille Bueno had a great chance to retake the lead, but was denied by a strong save from the keeper from a tight angle with a quarter of an hour remaining.
It wasn’t until the final ten minutes that Hertha began to create more dangerous attacking opportunities. on 87 minutes, substitute Niederlechner had a great chance to score the winner, but was unable to control the ball properly under pressure and fired wide of the goal. In stoppage time, the Lilies were lucky when Leistner’s shot hit the post. However, no more goals were scored, and the match ended in a draw.
