Aleksandar Vukotic in Portrait

The seventh newcomer for the 2024/25 season is central defender Aleksandar Vukotic. The 28-year-old is moving from SV Wehen Wiesbaden to Darmstadt and with a height of over two meters, probably has the best qualifications for a central defender. We took a closer look at our new defensive player and would like to introduce you to Aleksandar.

Aleksandar definitely has the right height for a central defender at the Böllenfalltor: the Serbian-born player is 2.01 meters tall and was the tallest player in the 2nd Bundesliga last season. „It’s definitely an advantage, especially in set piece situations,“ said the Lilies‘ seventh summer signing in an interview with Transfermarkt.de at the beginning of the year.

Vukotic, who was born in Kraljevo, was one of the best defensive headers in the 2nd Bundesliga last year, and from matchday eight onwards he was an absolute regular at SV Wehen Wiesbaden. “I waited for my chance and got it in the cup game against Leipzig. I would say I did a good job from then on,” said the central defender, looking back on last year’s start to the season in an interview with the online portal.

The defensive giant was trained in Serbia, in 2015 he moved to FK Krupa in Bosnia, and in 2018 he took the next step to Belgium. The now 28-year-old told Transfermarkt.de that he not only had the offer from the Hessian capital on the table in the summer of 2023, but could also have returned to Bosnia. “The football in Bosnia is not the best and Germany is a dream for professionals. And from the first moment I felt accepted by everyone here,” says Vukotic.

Now there is another change, even if this time the moving distance is particularly short. Vukotic is looking forward to his new role with the Darmstadt team: “I am happy to be able to continue playing in the 2nd league. I can’t wait to get to know everyone and then get started on the field with the team. I want to help the team with my style of play and do my part to ensure that Darmstadt is successful in the coming season.”

Welcome to Darmstadt, Aleksandar!

As Florian Kohfeldt approached the team's dressing room at halftime, the Darmstadt head coach heard exactly one sentence: "It's not finished." Fraser Hornby had uttered it, setting the tone for his teammates and himself. What followed was a remarkable second half from Darmstadt 98 and a point against SV Elversberg, a point that, while likely insufficient for their promotion hopes in southern Hesse, nonetheless filled the Darmstadt fans with pride.

Opposition Check: SV Elversberg

In the world of football, a yo-yo team is a team that oscillates between two leagues – too good for one league, but not quite at the level of the next higher one. The result is usually many promotions and many relegations. But SV Elversberg is currently redefining the term. For several years now, the yo-yo has been taking SVE almost exclusively upwards.
