„An extremely bitter day“

Extremely disappointing. This is how the bitter afternoon can be summed up after SV Darmstadt 98's clear 4-0 defeat at 1. FSV Mainz 05. We have compiled all the voices about the game for you.

Torsten Lieberknecht:

“Congratulations to Mainz 05 and my coaching colleagues. We weren’t the worse team in the first half. Both teams had their moments to take a 1-0 lead – we had the chances through Julian Justvan and Mathias Honsak when he got the ball with his toe. Mainz, on the other hand, were more dangerous than us with their deep balls. Then we go 1-0 behind after what I consider to be a dubious free kick. In the second half, with the score 2-0, our energy level was up and the plug was pulled. We wanted to put everything on one card, but then had little defensive work. The fact that it ends 0:4 hurts even more. Overall it’s a very disappointing day. We have to be realistic. Everything we would like for Darmstadt 98 this season would be a more than great miracle. It will be very, very difficult.”

Bo Henriksen:

“It was an extremely difficult game. We had some problems in the first half with their high pressing and second balls. But overall I thought we were more dangerous. We changed things up in the second half and had the momentum on our side. We did very well, especially in the second half, and showed a very good performance. I am very proud of my players’ performance.”

Fabian Holland:

„It’s an extremely bitter day. We didn’t manage to get 100 percent on the pitch today. Then we go behind due to a set piece, which is extremely annoying, especially because we haven’t defended set pieces well all season. Offensively, however, we wanted to create more, but we didn’t succeed. We can all read the table and know that it will be extremely difficult now. Walking into the corner and looking at the faces of the fans was very difficult. You don’t like to be sent home and leave the pitch with our heads hung down is extremely disappointing.“

Christoph Klarer:

„We were all aware of what was at stake today. You can’t expect any more chance than playing against the 16th place in the table and reducing the deficit to three points. It was a huge blow in the neck today. We weren’t good enough . We didn’t find our way in well, Schuh kept us in the game in the early stages. But then we went back 0-1 behind after a set piece. After our mistake that made it 0-2, it was even more difficult to come back here. At the end it became clear. We are extremely sorry – for the fans and the entire club. The fans give full throttle for 90 minutes and in the end it is 0:4. It hurts very, very much. But we will finish the season with pride and play to the end for honor.“
