“An unnecessary defeat”

No points for SV Darmstadt 98 at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. The Lilies lost 3-1 away to 1. FC Kaiserslautern, thus suffering their first defeat of the season. Darmstadt led 1-0 at one point, but conceded three decisive goals shortly before the final whistle. The blue-and-whites were correspondingly disappointed at the microphones after the final whistle. We've compiled all the comments from the game for you.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„Congratulations to Torsten and FCK on the win. The game played out exactly as we wanted it to for an extremely long time. We didn’t want a hectic game – even at the cost of perhaps not having as many fast-paced moves. We wanted to maintain structure and create chances from within that structure. In the first half, we had Mey’s best chance, which he should have taken. Then Isac’s follow-up shot. Overall, we were really strong until the 84th minute. We repeatedly created scoring opportunities from within our structure. But after that, FCK deserved the win. We did what we wanted to avoid at all costs: We let the game become hectic and didn’t stick to our structure. Therefore, we take two things with us: We were the controlling and better team for 80 minutes. Nevertheless, we still have phases in our game where we aren’t mature enough.“

Torsten Lieberknecht:

„Thanks for the congratulations, Flo. Darmstadt came to us undefeated. That was evident during the game. For us, it was all about defending against the physicality and athleticism of our opponents. In the first half, I saw some good opportunities for us. But overall, the first period was a rather tactical game. Both teams tried to maintain their offensive and defensive structure. In the second half, after Darmstadt went 1-0 down, we had to survive two or three more shots from them.  When the score was 1-1, we were able to really push on. We had a lot of fast runs, ran a lot, and decided the game thanks to our athleticism and our substitutes. Overall, it’s an important win for us. We’re very happy to have won 3-1.“

Luca Marseiler:

„The defeat hurts a lot. It was a tough game, but we had it under control until the 80th minute. After that, we played very, very silly – to put it positively. The first half was very intense, with a lot going both ways. But I think we deserved to take the lead in the second half. We played forward until 1-0 and had a good defence, but after that, we simply lacked the cleverness. With the power of the stadium, it was naturally difficult after the 1-1, because then the fans came out. What happened in the last ten minutes is inexplicable. We have to work through the defeat now – perhaps the game will still be important as a small reminder for the rest of the season. We have seven points and are trying to clear our heads during the international break after the exhausting last few weeks. And then we’ll continue in two weeks.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„We had everything under control for a long time against Lautern. The 1-1 draw, in which we unfortunately completely lost our composure, got the stadium on fire – then these kinds of games at the Betze are possible. I think we defended very well overall today – the stadium was very quiet. That was an unnecessary defeat against a team that was inferior to us. In my opinion, the stadium won the game today. We will watch and analyse the game.“
