Analysis: Dominance, entertainment, and unnecessary trembling

With a thrilling offensive onslaught, Darmstadt catapulted themselves to three more points against Karlsruher SC on Saturday evening. Despite it being St. Nicholas' Day, the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor proved once again that points are rarely leaving their home ground this season. Even after falling behind, the team from southern Hesse secured a well-deserved home victory and defended solidly as a unit. Read the analysis to find out why this doesn't contradict the unnecessary goals they conceded.

This went well:

Comeback qualities: Darmstadt have already collected 12 points after falling behind – the best in the league. This statistic is all the more impressive considering that only three teams have fallen behind less often than Darmstadt. „That’s a really great team spirit,“ Marco Richter aptly described after the match. So far this season, the team has developed a composure and self-confidence that prevents them from losing their composure even in negative moments. For example, after the 1-0 deficit, which hadn’t been anticipated at all. Or after Karlsruhe’s equaliser, in which Darmstadt played a significant role.

The defence: After the thrilling Saturday evening, much will likely be said and written about the offence, which generated a staggering 25 shots on goal. And yes, SV 98 played with high pressure, directness, and creativity going forward, creating a barrage of chances. However, what might be somewhat overlooked – especially considering the two goals conceded and, in particular, how they came about – is their defensive work. The Lilies stifled Karlsruhe’s attacks in their infancy by winning possession early and consistently tracking back. As a result, KSC created few, if any, opportunities. It’s all the more curious, then, that they still conceded two goals, both of which came about with considerable help from the South Hessians. For the first goal, the Boys in Blue inadvertently put the ball into their own net, and for the second, a poor first touch perfectly set up the equaliser.

Appearances at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor: SV 98’s trump card was already the Bölle last season, but this season the Lilies have raised the bar even higher. Nine competitive matches were played at the Nieder-Ramstädter Straße stadium in the 2025/26 season, and the home side didn’t lose a single one. They collected 18 points in eight league games, with only Kaiserslautern managing more at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. The symbiosis between the team and the fans is working, as evidenced by their successes in front of the home crowd. How fitting that the next home game follows this coming Sunday. Against Preußen Münster, they’ll be looking to extend this record even further.

That didn't go well:

The finishing: This criticism is obvious, as Darmstadt made it unnecessarily exciting. They had several promising opportunities to seal the victory against Karlsruhe and reward themselves for their impressive performance with a relaxed final phase. But they didn’t. „I think the only thing we can blame ourselves for today is that we squandered a lot of scoring chances,“ Maglica analysed in the catacombs of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. Darmstadt should have taken the lead in the first half before Karlsruhe suddenly scored the opening goal. Even after the break, Lidberg, Marseiler, Corredor & Co. continued to press forward, but despite their dominance, they only managed to add two more goals. It speaks volumes for Darmstadt that Maglica and Kohfeldt weren’t the only ones to address this issue afterward. Richter echoed this sentiment: „We had one or two more high-quality chances that we need to discuss.“ His coach, however, still saw the positives in the situation. „We’ve proven that we’re a team that can be very strong offensively even without Fraser Hornby,“ said Kohfeldt, who, regarding the missed opportunities, remarked: „Some days are like that, and we still found a way to win the game. That’s why I’m satisfied.“
