Analysis of the home victory: The resistance fighters from Bölle
A fast-paced, thrilling exchange between SV Darmstadt 98 and Fortuna Düsseldorf reached its ecstatic climax in the 88th minute. Thanks to Matej Maglica's header, Darmstadt secured a 2-1 victory in a wild battle that resembled a 12-round boxing match, with both sides neglecting their defences and constantly searching for the next hook or punch. A day later, sv98.de looks back on what was probably the most exciting home game of the season so far for the South Hessian side.
Scene of the Match:
The most beautiful goal of the afternoon was undoubtedly the early 1-0: a through ball from Niklas Schmidt, a one-touch pass from Killian Corredor to Isac Lidberg, who found Marco Richter, whose cross was headed home by Fraser. A picture-perfect goal – football, you can be so beautiful. But football can also be – as we all know – so emotional, so cathartic, so dramatic. And that’s precisely why, despite the aesthetic appeal of the 1-0, Matej Maglica’s winning goal naturally takes the „Moment of the Match“ award. Firstly, because of its significance for the result, but also as a bridge to the following category. Because Maglica’s headed goal once again illustrates what defines this team in the 2025/26 season.
This went well:
Resilience. In recent weeks, especially after away games, Darmstadt 98 have sometimes been called the comeback kings of the league. This description, however, can be placed in a broader context: This season, SV 98 possesses the ability to defy all kinds of adversity. At Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, they found an answer to Hertha Berlin’s high-energy football after 30 minutes. In Braunschweig, the team hit the reset button at halftime and unleashed a phenomenal second half on the Eintracht pitch. And on Saturday afternoon, the game seemed to be tipping in Fortuna’s favour in the second half. But Darmstadt 98 first broke free from the pressure, then stabilised, and from the 80th minute onward even pushed for the win themselves. „When you’re near the top of the table, you certainly develop a deep belief that you can score goals from many different phases of the game,“ head coach Florian Kohfeldt explained, describing his team’s ability. It’s a beautifully executed combination like the 1-0 goal, but sometimes a simple header from a corner kick is enough.
The offensive play. Although we already addressed this in our analysis after the Braunschweig match last week, it’s worth repeating: SV 98 seems capable of finding offensive solutions against almost any opponent. Against the Rhinelanders, the team from southern Hesse repeatedly created opportunities to extend their lead. For example, in the 40th minute, when Richter narrowly missed making it 2-1 after a pass from Lidberg. Or after the restart, when Hornby was set up by Luca Marseiler, but his shot was just a metre away from goal. Or after an hour, when Niklas Schmidt almost scored a spectacular bicycle kick. The matches don’t always culminate in a goal fest like the 4-0 rout against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. But the Lilies consistently create chances to score. This bodes well for the remainder of the season. Kohfeldt: „It was more of a draw, more like a 3-3 than a 1-1.“
That didn't go well:
The defensive processes. And that very statement from the Darmstadt coach introduces this section. Because as well as SV 98 played going forward at times, they must also acknowledge that luck and Marcel Schuhen prevented them from falling behind in one or two situations. „Offensively, it was more than okay. But defensively, we weren’t good,“ Kohfeldt openly admitted. The Lilies won the ball back fewer times than usual and too often made the wrong decision, or too late, when tracking back. Sometimes pressing triggers failed, and other times opportunities to move inside were missed. The result: an extremely entertaining match that basically left no time for bathroom breaks or beer trips. Because it was a constant back-and-forth in both penalty areas. „It was an open, end-to-end affair, the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time,“ Schuhen aptly summarised. Of course, the truth is that Fortuna’s attack possesses considerable quality with players like Itten, Appelkamp, Muslija, and the lively wing-back Iyoha. Nevertheless, they would prefer a more solid defence in their own half next Friday against Dynamo Dresden.
Quote of the Day:
Overall, praise to my team for their focus and mentality.
