Analysis: The Right Moments

For the first time since the 2018/19 season, the Lilies won their opening match. A hat trick from Isac Lidberg and a header from Aleksandar Vukotic secured the goals in a 4-1 victory against VfL Bochum. We look back at the successful start to the season with our analysis.

Scene of the Game:

There were several scenes that will surely have stuck in the minds of the Lilien fans after the opening victory against VfL Bochum. Isac Lidberg scored SV 98’s first goal of the 2025/26 season, firing the ball into the visitors‘ net at a whopping 126 km/h in the fifth minute of the game. Immediately, the fans were on fire, and the emotions that all Darmstadt fans had been longing for during the summer break were immediately palpable. The Swede scored two more goals later in the game, finally putting his team on the road to victory.

Aleksandar Vukotic provided another special moment, first heading in to make it 4-1 and then celebrating with the fans and the famous „Siu celebration“ that Cristano Ronaldo made world famous years ago.

A substitution in the 85th minute brought great emotion. For the first time since April 14, 2024, Fabian Holland made his competitive appearance for the Lilies after his seemingly endless period of suffering. A moment that also left his teammate Marcel Schuhen unmoved: „I’m incredibly happy that Fabi is back after his long period of suffering. He’s very important for our group. And it’s great that the game went the way he did and that he was able to get some playing time.“

Goals, celebrations, emotions – the very first matchday offered a whole potpourri of moments that absolutely deserve to be mentioned in this category.

This went well:

The right moments. Of course, a goal can never come at the wrong time. But in every game, there are moments when a goal has a special impact. On Saturday afternoon, everyone agreed that the goals from South Hesse were perfectly timed, as Florian Kohfeldt also confirmed: „The goals came at the right moments. We managed to put the lid on this game today when we had the chance. Against a team like Bochum, you can’t leave the door open. And we closed it.“

The SV 98 head coach was referring in particular to the two quick goals after the break, which, despite the opponent’s strength, were tantamount to a small pre-match decision. But Lidberg’s 2-1 goal almost at halftime also had an immense impact, allowing the Lilies to head into the locker room with a lead and a very good feeling.

Stability. „We didn’t waver and remained stable. Even after conceding the goal. We were then able to calm the game down and reacted well to the goal.“ After the final whistle, Kohfeldt repeatedly emphasised the stability his team had shown in various phases of the game and in a variety of positions. While Bochum had created some good opportunities throughout the game, the head coach also consciously included Marcel Schuhen’s saves in his overall assessment of this solid performance. The 42-year-old also spoke of „a brief phase where the game could have gone in a different direction.“ But even those minutes in the first half were overcome by the Lilies as a united team, especially after the avoidable goal conceded in the 34th minute.

That didn't go well:

The goal conceded. It was clear that VfL Bochum would create scoring opportunities due to their high individual quality. It was all the more frustrating that a mistake by SV 98 led to Moritz Broschinski’s goal. The attacker had acted robustly, bordering on fouling, against the somewhat hesitant Patric Pfeiffer. Referee Burda understandably ruled play on, and the visitors‘ striker scored to make it 1-1. „The goal conceded was very frustrating,“ Florian Kohfeldt admitted frankly, adding: „We actually had a great counter-pressing situation.“

The head coach was pleased, however, with Pfeiffer’s reaction, who subsequently delivered a flawless performance and contributed significantly to the home win: „That was great from Paddy. Mistakes are part of it. Keep going.“

Quote of the Day:

It's important to start the season with a win. But it was just one game. Keep calm and keep going.
