Courageous, determined, full of energy: The analysis of the cup match evening

"That was one of our best performances of the season," emphasised Marcel Schuhen in the catacombs of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor after the final whistle. His team had just delivered an incredible display of energy over 90 minutes, deservedly beating FC Schalke 04 4-0 in the second round of the DFB Cup. This impressive qualification for the round of 16 was overshadowed by a medical emergency in the stands, which continued to concern the players and staff on both sides even after the match had ended. In our analysis, we look at the sporting events, but also at the special atmosphere created by both sets of fans in the stands.

Scenes from the game:

A 2-0 halftime lead can sometimes be deceptive in football. „We felt we still had a chance at halftime,“ explained Miron Muslic at the post-match press conference. He was well aware that his team could have been trailing by an even larger margin after 45 minutes. But that chance would only have existed „if we had remained solid, not conceded a third goal, and managed to pull one back,“ added the head coach of FC Schalke 04. And that’s precisely where our two „moments of the match“ come in.

Just three minutes after the restart, Darmstadt nipped Schalke’s hopes in the bud. Fraser Hornby finished off a lightning-fast Darmstadt counter-attack with a clinical finish in the 48th minute, effectively sealing the victory early in the second half. But that wasn’t all. Even with this comfortable three-goal lead, Darmstadt didn’t let up. Bartosz Bialek (60th minute) scored the fourth and final goal of the evening just a minute after coming on as a substitute. It was his first goal in a Darmstadt shirt, and he celebrated it accordingly with all his teammates. „I’m delighted that Bartosz scored. It’s these little moments that make the evening even sweeter,“ Marcel Schuhen aptly summarised.

This went well:

Darmstadt football. „We played exactly the way I envision my team playing,“ said a proud Florian Kohfeldt after the 4-0 victory against FC Schalke 04. Courageous. Determined. Fast-paced. That’s Darmstadt football for you. From the first minute, SV Darmstadt 98 brought incredible energy to the pitch. The team from southern Hesse pressed aggressively, won the ball back numerous times, and were always brave enough to launch quick counter-attacks.

Last Friday’s 1-0 defeat at Schalke was a completely different story. Darmstadt failed to consistently and boldly exploit the spaces behind Schalke’s defensive line. Kohfeldt’s analysis and coaching staff repeatedly reviewed video footage of the match at the Veltins-Arena. Before the rematch, they emphasised to the team the importance of consistently exploiting those spaces and not being intimidated by Schalke’s aggressive, high pressing. „We knew Schalke were aggressive off the ball. But when their back line is high, there have to be spaces somewhere. We didn’t find them on Friday, but we did so much better today,“ analysed Fabian Holland. Schuhen added: „We radiated danger and energy from every angle. We played with tremendous intensity off the ball and found excellent solutions on it.“ The 4-0 home victory in the DFB Cup was the logical consequence of this typical Darmstadt performance.

Darmstadt efficiency. „Not incisive enough.“ That was the headline of our analysis after the 0-1 defeat at Schalke. We were similarly critical of the Lilies‘ attacking efforts in our analysis of the goalless draw against Magdeburg. In both matches, in which SV 98 failed to score, they lacked the necessary drive towards the opponent’s goal. The South Hessians didn’t make enough of winning the ball and transitioning quickly. The DFB Cup match against Schalke, however, was a completely different story. „We didn’t have a good spell in the last two games. But we responded with our performance and played our style of football without compromise,“ praised Kohfeldt. Holland offered a similar assessment in his analysis. „We created enough scoring opportunities and were very efficient. That’s how a game like this comes about,“ said the Lilies‘ number 32.

Home advantage. Somehow, Marcel Schuhen had a feeling about it on the evening of the 0-1 defeat at Schalke. He knew that an evening match under the floodlights at the Bölle would be „awesome.“ And it was. The Lilies, fueled by the fans, pushed themselves forward. It started right from the bus arrival and the warm-up. „The team immediately realised that there was a lot at stake today,“ said Holland. And that’s exactly what happened. The Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor showed once again against Schalke that it has been an absolute fortress so far this season. SV 98 has played six competitive matches here this season, winning four and drawing only two – scoring twelve goals, conceding just two, and keeping four clean sheets. A home winning streak that they hope will continue on Saturday evening (November 1st/8:30pm) against Arminia Bielefeld – again under the floodlights..

That didn't go well:

We could, of course, start nitpicking. Perhaps we’d even find something with 15 shots on goal and „only“ four goals. But that would be out of place given such an energetic performance, such a commanding display, and such a well-deserved victory. So let’s quickly close that category and leave it at the words of the Darmstadt captain: „From a sporting perspective, it was a perfect cup night!“

All the best to the fan. We are thinking of him and hope he gets through this difficult situation well.

Florian Kohfeldt

Shortly after kickoff, a medical emergency occurred in the north stand of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. Both the Darmstadt and Schalke supporters reacted promptly, initially halting their support. „The fans handled the situation with incredible respect – Darmstadt and Schalke fans were united. The way the support was then announced again also deserves a mention,“ emphasised Kohfeldt at the post-match press conference. Schuhen also highlighted this remarkable sensitivity from both sets of supporters: „This tact was extremely important, allowing the emergency services to do their job. A huge thank you to the fans and especially to all the emergency personnel. We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the fan.“

But not only the head coach and captain of SV 98, but also all the other Darmstadt and Schalke figures who spoke to the microphones on Wednesday evening, sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery to the fan, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

We join in wishing you all the best and keeping our fingers crossed!
