SV Darmstadt 98 started their home game powerfully and set the tone right from kick-off. After just three minutes, the home team had their first good chance to score: Bueno broke through on the left wing and his precise cross reached Marseiler. But his header was too close to Reimann. As a result, Darmstadt also showed themselves to be more grippy and tried to bridge the midfield quickly and purposefully when they had possession of the ball.
In the 11th minute, the South Hesse team logically took the lead: Reimann was only able to push away a shot from Corredor, Marseiler reacted quickest and squared it for Lidberg. In the center, Lidberg pushed the ball over the line after a bit of a scramble – 1-0. The Lilies then kept the tempo high and almost made it 2-0 after around a quarter of an hour: Lopez initiated a counterattack, Marseiler fed Corredor, who shot the ball just past the goal (16th).
But then the equaliser came out of nowhere: Burcu beat Riedel on the left, entered the penalty area and placed the ball in the far bottom corner. The equaliser with the first real chance in the game seemed to have inspired the guests. From then on, the FCM showed themselves to be much more present and repeatedly created promising opportunities. In the 33rd minute, Krempicki’s head hit the woodwork. The Lilies were no longer able to free themselves from the clutches, but they could have taken the lead after 38 minutes: Marseiler found Hornby with a great pass, but Riemann was able to fend off the shot.
After the restart, Darmstadt were caught straight away: Krempicki used a cross from the left to give Magdeburg the lead on 48 minutes when he side footed home. Overall, the second round was significantly less eventful than the first 45 minutes. The action mainly took place between the penalty areas.
From the 73rd minute onwards, the guests were outnumbered: Mathisen picked up his second yellow when he caught Marseiler. With one more man on the field, the Lilies tried everything again to try and make it 2-2. In the 81st minute, almost all home fans were already screaming for goal: Lakenmacher was initially denied by Reimann, and Nürnberger’s follow-up shot was blocked by a Magdeburg player. SV 98 pressed until the final whistle, but the equaliser would not arrive
