Defeat in Mainz
SV Darmstadt 98 lost 0:4 (0:1) at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the 28th Bundesliga matchday.
The game between the Lilies and FSV Mainz 05 started at a frenetic pace: there was a lot of speed in the game in the first few minutes and both teams had good opportunities. The first went to the home team, but Marcel Schuhen got down low to turn Burkardt’s shot around the post after 5 minutes. From the following corner, the Lilies countered and the Zentner was able to clear in front of Mathias Honsak who was chasing the ball forward. The ball landed at the feet of Tim Skarke, but his attempt from a long distance landed in the ‚keepers arms.
In the following minutes, both teams continued to have their chances, but the hosts had the better opportunities, but without troubling Marcel Schuhen. After 22 minutes, Darmstadt moved the ball forward but Julian Justvan dragged his effort wide of the post from the edge of the area.
Mainz took the lead on 32 minutes: after a free kick was floated into the area, Lee didn’t hit the ball properly, but diverted it straight to Hanche-Olsen, who slid the ball home from close range.
After conceding the goal, the visitors struggled to unlock the Mainz defence and went into the break with a narrow deficit.
For the second half, Torsten Lieberknecht made a double change at the break with Aaron Seydel and Gerrit Holtmann coming on. SV 98 also did better in the first few minutes of the half. Honsak hit the outside of the post with a header from a free kick as we looked to level things up.
Nevertheless, the hosts increased in the 60th minute: A back pass was under hit, the ball landed at the feet of Gruda and he rifled home from close range. The Mainz team now always had space for counterattacks and so the Lilies were lucky that Amiri pushed the ball past the far post in the 63rd minute.
As the game drew to a close, Lee was able to grab himself a brace in the 80th and then 85th minutes. On 80 minutes, he was able to flick home a low cross into the area and then converted another ball into the area.
