Deserved Defeat in Elversberg
An away appearance to forget: The Lilies lost 4-0 (2-0) to SV Elversberg. The South Hessians, who fell behind early on and subsequently never really found their game, go into the international break with one point and a lot of work to do.
The Lilies‘ away game at SV Elversberg began with a cold shower for the South Hesse team: after just five minutes, Schnellbacher headed the home team into the lead. Darmstadt immediately tried to respond quickly, but Fynn Lakenmacher’s attempt flew from a tight angle into the side netting 3 minutes later.
Overall, the Elversberg team remained clearly the more dangerous team and were able to double their lead on 20 minutes with some good fortune: a shot from Asllani was deflected into the corner by Clemens Riedel. As a result, the 98ers hardly found any solutions in the opponent’s half and were lucky shortly before the break that the deficit was not greater when Damar missed a great opportunity when alone in front of goal. At the break, the hosts led 2-0.
After the break, the Lilies came out of the break improved and looked more dangerous: a free kick from substitute Sergio López was clawed away from the top corner by the keeper on 55 minutes. That miss proved crucial as Asllani increased the lead to 3-0, 4 minutes later after the Lilies had surrendered possession.
Following a corner, Le Joncour from Elversberg had an unfortunate landing and was seriously injured and the game had to be interrupted for a total of almost 20 minutes.
When the game restarted, the Lilies had two good chances, but first Kristof deflected a shot from Luca Marseiller out for a corner, then a header from Aleksander Vukotic hit the crossbar after 86 minutes. Instead, Elversberg scored again: Gerezigher made it 4-0 in the final minute of normal time.
With 25 minutes of added time due to injuries, Elversberg thought they had added a fifth in the 14th minute of added time and despite the goal being given on the pitch, VAR intervened and disallowed it for offside.
