Freiburg Prevails
We tried a lot, but in the end we suffered another defeat: The Lilies lost 0-1 (0-1) against SC Freiburg.
In the home game against SC Freiburg, the Lilies were immediately on the front foot and caused danger in the first few minutes. In the first minute of the game, Emir Karic looked for Aaron Seydel at the back post with a cross, but the opposing defender got to the ball first. Two minutes later, a ball bounced back to Seydel after another Karic cross, but the shot went wide of the post.
The game settled after that positive start as Freiburg began to gain a foothold in the game. After almost half an hour, the Lilies had a great chance to take the lead: Oscar Vilhelmsson chased a long ball forward and played a ball across the area looking for Seydel but the ball missed the striker and the chance was gone. The visitors should have opened the scoring on 33 minutes as Gregoritsch was found at the far post but his volley from a tight angle was put back across goal and missed the post. However, Freiburg took advantage of their next chance 3 minutes later; Ritsu Doan wrapped his foot round the ball and curled one into the bottom corner.
Shortly before the half-time whistle there was a huge chance to equalize: Fabian Holland stole the ball from his opponent, but was then denied by the keeper from close range (43′). The draw certainly wouldn’t have been undeserved, but the 98ers still had to go into the break one behind.
After the break, the home team tried to equalise early, but first Vilhelmsson couldn’t control a ball from Kempe in the first minute of the half, then a shot from Seydel landed in the arms of Noah Atubolu 2 minutes later.
Darmstadt were well on top now and had a lot of possession whilst kept creating some half chances. In the 55th minute, Vilhelmsson saw his effort inadvertently blocked by Seydel with the loose ball falling to Kempe but he shot over the bar. The Lilies now had advantages in almost all statistics, but the visitors were still able to get their foot in and disrupt play.
Even in the final minutes, the Lilies kept pushing but were ultimately to be denied. Mathias Honsak and Gerrit Holtmann both saw efforts smothered by Atubolu in added time.
