High-scoring test against Mannheim

The Lilies used the international break to play a friendly against SV Waldhof Mannheim. Florian Kohfeldt's team drew 5-5 (1-2) with the third-division side at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. Bialek and Lakenmacher each scored twice, with Furukawa also scoring.

Many players made a positive impression today. We played very well going forward and had some nice combinations. We were poor defending today, but we had to take that into account, as Matej was unavailable with minor adductor problems, Meldin had dental surgery, and Max Pfister was out due to illness. We had to put players in unfamiliar positions in defence. No blame on the lads; the test was still worthwhile today.

Mannheim double strike

After a brief period of feeling each other out, the Lilies were successful with their first attack. A sharp cross from Leon Klassen was converted by Bartosz Bialek in the 7th minute to take an early lead. Just two minutes later, the Lilies should have been awarded a penalty, but the clear foul on Yosuke Furukawa went unpunished.

SV 98 subsequently controlled the game without creating any major opportunities. Instead, it was the visitors who had two chances through Masca (26th and 27th minutes) before Malte Karbstein equalised from a corner in the 29th minute. Just two minutes later, Waldhof took the lead. Maximilian Thalhammer quickly took a free kick from around 18 meters, surprising the Lilies and goalkeeper Alexander Brunst – 1-2 from the South Hesse side’s perspective.

Darmstadt had two more small chances before halftime, but they were unable to score another goal before the break.

Lots of goals after the break

Immediately after the restart, the visitors were awarded a penalty following a foul by Mark Meier, which Masca confidently converted (48th minute). The Lilies‘ response was not long in coming: Bialek set up Lakenmacher, who confidently fired into the near post (50th minute). The game continued in this vein – Terrence Boyd made it 4-2 (51st minute), and Yosuke Furukawa promptly pulled a goal back with Lakenmacher’s assist (52nd minute).

Anyone who thought the game might settle down was proven wrong less than 60 seconds later: Masca capitalised on a mistake by the Lilies‘ defense to make it 3-5 (54th minute).

SV 98 again scored their ninth goal of the afternoon. Hiroki Akiyama played Lakenmacher free, who finished confidently (57′).

In the 63rd minute, Seyhan Yigit brought down Furukawa in the penalty area, and Bialek converted the resulting penalty to make it 5-5.

Semih Güler and Akiyama then missed further chances for the Lilies, keeping the high-scoring tie intact until the final whistle.

Line-Up: Brunst (Börner, 46′) – Lopez, Klassen, Marseiler (Lakenmacher, 46′), Akiyama, Klefisch (Meier, 46’/U19, Papela, 65′), Güler, Bialek (Herbst/U21, 65′), Holland, Furukawa, Arnold.

Tore: 1:0 Bialek (7′), 1:1 Karbstein (29′), 1:2 Thalhammer (31′), 1:3 Masca (p)(48′), 2:3 Lakenmacher (50′), 2:4 Boyd (51′), 3:4 Furukawa (52′), 3:5 Masca (54′), 4:5 Lakenmacher (57′), 5:5 Bialek (p)(63′)
