The opening phase of the home game against 1. FC Magdeburg was largely played between the penalty areas, meaning that neither team initially had many chances. The home side had the first notable attempt: Luca Marseiler turned and shot from distance, but Reimann in the visitors‘ goal was able to parry the ball with his fists on 16 minutes.

It took until the 27th minute for the next opportunity: Following a cross from Killian Corredor, Marco Richter shot on the turn, but his shot was saved by Reimann with his foot. The next shot also belonged to Richter: After a successful counterattack, the ball found its way to the midfielder via Marseiler and Lidberg, but his shot from the edge of the box landed in the arms of the keeper, 10 minutes before the interval.

The pace of the game picked up in the final minutes of the first period. The visitors also had their only shots of the first half in the 41st minute, but both were blocked by the Lilien defence. Two minutes later, the 98ers countered again in impressive fashion, and Fraser Hornby fired a powerful shot from 16 meters, but his effort flew just wide of the post. The teams went to the dressing rooms without scoring.

After the break, the momentum initially picked up, and just five minutes later, the Lilien had another good opportunity: Marseiler found space, went to the penalty area, and shot, but Reimann again got his foot in the way. Four minutes later, the visitors received a free kick from a promising position, but Atik’s attempt hit the wall.

In the 64th minute, a set piece from the 98ers posed a threat: The ball eventually bounced to Lidberg, whose header was too inaccurate on goal. Magdeburg also had a chance in the second half, but Ahl-Holmström headed over the bar from a tight angle a minute later.

After an aerial duel, referee Eckermann ruled out a foul on Sergio López in the 82nd minute and showed the defender his second yellow card. This meant that the South Hesse side had to finish the game with a man down. The visitors tried to capitalise on their numerical advantage, but the Lilies threw themselves into every possession and secured the point.
