Home Win! Finally!

The wait is over! Thanks to a self-sacrificing home performance, SV 98 retained the three points in the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. The Lilies won 5:1 (2:1) against 1. FC Köln and put on a passionate performance over 90 minutes. A Hornby brace, Lidberg, Förster and Vukotic converted the fight into goals and points on Friday evening.

The guests from Köln started the first few minutes powerfully and initially had a little more action. After just five minutes, the Lilies had the first good finish of the game: Isac Lidberg prevailed strongly against his opponent in the penalty area and shot the ball just past the far post. Five minutes later, the Bölle fans had something to cheer: Philipp Förster saw the ball fall to Fraser Hornby who controlled it and fired it into the bottom corner after 11 minutes.

After the goal, the away team pressed for the equaliser and kept the Darmstadt team busy on defense. The Rhinelanders repeatedly played their way into the penalty area, but were mostly prevented from finishing by a Lily player. It took until the 31st minute for the next opportunity, Kai Klefisch nodded down the ball for Förster who sent a volley inches past the far post. Three minutes later Waldschmidt shot wide the for ‚Effzeh‘. Shortly afterwards, the Köln team used their first real shot at the goal and levelled through Tim Lemperle.

But the South Hesse team found the perfect answer and promptly took the lead again: Lidberg showed his pace to escape past his marker and had the vision to roll it across goal for Hornby to tap it into an empty net on 40 minutes. Killian Corredor almost made it 3-1 in stoppage time, but failed due to a strong save from Urbig. So the narrow lead went into the locker room.

After the break, the game initially appeared fairly even. The Lilies repeatedly managed to calm down the game through longer ball passages. In the 54th minute, the Darmstadt team countered to make it 3-1: Corredor crossed to Hornby, who headed towards his fellow striker and Lidberg hammered the ball into the net from eleven meters.

In the following minutes, the visitors tried to get back into the game, but Marcel Schuhen was wide awake twice and prevented the goal from being conceded in the 64th and 65th minutes. Instead of conceding a goal, the 98ers added their fourth goal; Förster passed through to Luca Marseiler, who played it back to Förster who sat down his defender before stroking the ball home.

With 15 minutes remaining, Marcel Schuhen produced the save of the match. Florian Kainz delivered a ball into the area which Damion Downs flicked towards goal but Schuhen reacted instinctively to push it away.

In the final minutes, the Lilies were able to nullify the threat from the visitors and grabbed a fifth in added time. Aleksandar Vukotic was able to waltz into the penalty area and plant a header into the back of the net.
