“It’s unbelievable that there were 6,000 Lily fans here today.”

34 out of 34 match days. The Lilies say goodbye to the 1st Bundesliga with a 0-4 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. How do the two head coaches classify the game? What do the Darmstadt protagonists say? We have summarised all the voices about the game for you.

Torsten Lieberknecht:

“We did it quite sensibly in the first 30 minutes, started well and had good energy. But after the first and second goals, it became difficult. We couldn’t maintain our performance from the early stages. That’s why we lost the game. It was important to us today to be respectful of BVB’s situation and also respectful of Marco Reus. Our fans showed the greatest attitude today: after the game we went into the corner as a relegated team and felt an unusual level of affection and great solidarity. It is our obligation to keep our motivation high and to start something new with high motivation. Finally, I wish BVB much success in the Champions League final and hope that the football gods are on Dortmund’s side.”

Edin Terzic:

„It was a very successful afternoon for us. The emotions were palpable during, before and after the game. We also did our part from the 30th minute onwards and achieved a deserved victory. Great respect also to the opponent the attitude and fairness today. I also think that Marco was very happy with the setting and how the day went. We will now focus entirely on June 1st and then show our best game of the season at Wembley.“

Tobias Kempe:

„It was important for us after the game to stand with our fans. For me personally – I’m turning 35 – it was another highlight today. You start your football career to play in such stadiums in front of so many spectators. Nevertheless, it was in terms of the quality and the power here in Dortmund, they are rightly in the Champions League final. Now it’s time for us to recharge our batteries and then go full steam ahead. The 2nd league has great quality – with all the clubs waiting for us there, it won’t be a walk in the park.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„From an athlete’s point of view, it sounds strange after a 4-0 defeat and of course we want to win games, but the way we played today was fine. We started bravely, and then Dortmund’s goals all show individual class, especially the world-class free kick. Now this season is over. Nevertheless, I enjoyed being able to play against such a team in this stadium. It’s incredible and absolutely crazy that there were 6,000 Lily fans here today and I think they showed great flair, that the fans also honoured our banner and that we had previously shown a performance that allowed us to show them this appreciation. If we had done it in a different way, I think this conclusion was good for everyone involved. This season is halfway reasonable.“

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.

The final score was 2-1 after a late goal from the home side, following Isac Lidberg's earlier equaliser.
