The home team started with pressure and raised the temperature in the Lilien penalty area on several occasions. On the other side, the guests appeared in front of the opposing goal for the first time after nine minutes: Aleksandar Vukotic narrowly missed the target from a corner as his header went wide. That miss proved crucial as KSC took the lead a minute later: a cross found Burnic who buried his effort first time beyond Marcel Schuhen. However, the Lilien responded and drew level on 15 minutes. A long ball was knocked across the area by Fraser Hornby and Isac Lidberg was on hand to convert form close range.
The Lilies stayed on the attack, but Killian Corredor was off target with his shot on 18 minutes. As a result, the game became much more evenly balanced than in the first ten minutes. In the 28th minute, Karlsruhe took the lead again: Jensen arrowed a volley into the top corner from 30 yards. But the Lilies also had their moments, Lidberg narrowly missed in the 38th minute and a minute later, Corredor had another chance for an equaliser after a cross from Sergio Lopez.
After the interval the visitors came out with a spring in their step and saw chances come and go for Marseiler and Förster. In the 49th minute, Förster scored for the Lilies. However, the goal was called back due to an offside position by Lidberg. However, not to be deterred SV 98 attacked and Marseiler’s shot could only be deflected by KSC keeper Weiß for a corner. Lopez made it sharp again, Vukotic extended it to Kai Klefisch, who headed it in to make it 2-2 – and this time the goal counted. As a result, SV 98 remained in control, continued to act with intent and looked for a way forward. Weiß made another save pushing away a shot at the expense of a corner. Vukotic this time saw his header find the target and put Darmstadt into the lead.
Out of nowhere, Schleusener scored for KSC after 78 minutes as he converted a cross. The Lilies still didn’t give up, Kempe tested the goalkeeper, who deflected the shot for a corner. Lidberg saw his volley slide inches past the goal. In the 90th minute, SV 98 had luck on their side when a Wanitzek free kick first hit the crossbar and then bounced off Schuhen’s back onto the post. In the end, the points remained divided.
