In the early stages of the cup game at Dynamo Dresden, the South Hesse team had a lot of possession, but initially failed to capitalise on it. The home team made better use of what little they had in the game in the eighth minute, but Daferner’s shot ended up in the side netting.

As the game progressed, the Lilien were hardly allowed any action, but they rarely found a way through on the offensive against the deep-lying home side. Overall, there were hardly any chances to score. With no VAR in operation, it was left to the referee to make decisions: Fraser Hornby was brought down from behind in the penalty area, but referee Stieler’s whistle didn’t sound. After half an hour, the Dresden team developed a small phase of pressure, but the Darmstadt team still had a leg in the way and so Marcel Schuhen was not challenged.

A few seconds before the half-time whistle, the 98ers almost took the lead: After a free kick, Meißner directed a turning shot from Hornby towards his own goal and the ball bounced onto the crossbar. Overall, the Lilies lacked the necessary precision and so they went into the locker room without any goals.

After the half-time whistle, the Lilies had the game largely under control. Aleksandar Vukotic was denied on the 56th minute as his effort from a corner was turned away for another corner. However, he wasn’t to be denied on this occasion and put the Lilies ahead as he headed home. He had a chance to double his and the Darmstadt tally 3 minutes later but shot over the bar.

On the other hand, Dresden also caused danger after a corner, but Schuhen reacted strongly and directed Meißner’s header over the crossbar on 63 minutes. Three minutes later, Daferner tried from the turn, but again no problem for Schuhen. In direct response, Isac Lidberg shot, but the shot was saved in the 67th minute. Shortly afterwards, Schreiber had to intervene again in the Dynamo goal and parried a Hornby attempt. Chances for the Lilies now every minute: Lidberg let the ball through for Killian Corredor, who appeared completely free in front of the goal, but hesitated too long and was just blocked. Darmstadt was on the verge of making it 2-0, but then a smoke development after a pyrotechnic display in the Dynamo block caused a longer break.

In the final phase, the hosts increased the risk and thus offered the Lilies more space and in the 80th minute Corredor served Lidberg, but the shot was just blocked. On the other side, Kutschke got a header, Schuhen dived and prevented the leveller with 10 minutes remaining. Three minutes later he was powerless and a header from Lemmer flew into the net to equalise.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Fynn Lakenmacher played a pass into the penalty area, Philipp Förster let the ball through and Lidberg was brought down with the referee this time whistling for the penalty. Substitute Tobias Kempe stayed cool and scored confidently to take the lead again (90th + 2). But that wasn’t the end of it, in the 100th minute – two minutes after the end of the indicated stoppage time – Lemmer scored again to equalise and ensure extra time.

In extra time, Lakenmacher had the chance to make it 3-2 after a few seconds, but he only hit the side netting from a tight angle in the first minute. Five minutes later, Lemmer again got into a good position to finish, but this time he was denied by Schuhen. In the 98th minute, the 98ers scored for the third time: Guille Bueno came through strongly, Förster moved into the penalty area, was just separated from the ball, Lidberg was wide awake and slotted in to make it 3-2.

In the second period of extra time, the Lilies initially managed very well to keep the hosts away from their own goal. However, the Darmstadt team continued to set the tone on the offensive and so Bueno forced the keeper to make a save in the 112th minute of the game. Two minutes later, Schuhen flew across goal, deflecting Hartmann’s long-range shot around the post with a remarkable save and securing the round of 16 ticket for SV Darmstadt.
