Lilies lose to Wiesbaden
Darmstadt lost the first of two midseason friendlies against SV Wehen Wiesbaden 1-0 (1-0) in Oliva Nova. Lukas Schleimer scored the only goal of the game in the 44th minute on a difficult pitch.
Overall, it was a good test against a decent opponent. The conditions were tough, but we still wanted to play our game. Today was about getting the lads into a rhythm; the result is secondary. Our focus is on Saturday's game, when hopefully we'll have a few more players available. Then we want to get into our stride and take the next step.
Falling behind just before halftime
On a difficult pitch, Wiesbaden had the first scoring opportunity, with Jordy Gillkens‘ shot from a set piece saved by Alexander Brunst. For Darmstadt, the lively Yosuke Furukawa created some dangerous moments in the opening stages: first, the Japanese player forced SVWW goalkeeper Noah Brdar into a save with his effort (11th minute), and shortly afterward, he set up Bartosz Bialek, whose shot lacked precision (13th minute).
After 17 minutes, Gillkens and Brunst faced off again. Once more, the Darmstadt goalkeeper emerged victorious. The game then settled down somewhat, with Darmstadt enjoying more possession but failing to create any truly dangerous chances. As the match progressed, the pitch became increasingly difficult to play on, with the ball frequently bouncing unpredictably. Darmstadt tried to find solutions through skilful play, but their final pass lacked accuracy.
However, a similarly precise move led to Wiesbaden taking the lead shortly before the halftime whistle. Lukas Schleimer scored after a cross, making it 0-1 from Darmstadt’s perspective.
Furukawa misses equaliser
At halftime, Florian Kohfeldt made a total of six substitutions. SVWW registered the first dangerous attack, with Ole Wohlers denied by Benedikt Börner (53′). The next shots belonged to Darmstadt; a superb header was cleared off the line, and just seconds later, Merveille Papela headed the ball narrowly over the bar (56′).
With a good fifteen minutes remaining, Darmstadt came close to equalising, with Furukawa narrowly missing the far corner. Little else happened in either penalty area after that, and Darmstadt held on for a narrow defeat.
Both teams will meet again on Saturday (January 10th, 1pm) for another friendly match in Oliva Nova.
