Paul Fernie: “Sergio López brings speed and dynamism and thus covers important components that we were looking for for this squad position. He is highly trained and a player who fills the role of wing back as we imagine it. The fact that he can also play on the left side makes him even more interesting for us as a whole package. We are happy that he chose us.”
Torsten Lieberknecht: “Sergio López is an exciting player for us with his profile and gives us additional variability as an offensive wing back who can be used on the right and left. I look forward to working together and am convinced that he will help us in the upcoming season.”
Sergio López: “I had very good discussions with those responsible and felt great interest in the club from the first second. I am a big fan of German football and am looking forward to my time with the Lilies.”
The German-Spanish, who was born in Remscheid, moved to Real Madrid’s youth team in the summer of 2016 and also took his first steps in the men’s team with the reigning Champions League winners. From 2018 to 2021 he played for Real Madrid Castilla – interrupted by a one-year loan to the second representation of Real Valladolid. López then played for FC Basel. In his three seasons with the Swiss club, the right-footed player played a total of 55 games in the top division (3 goals, 3 assists) and seven cup matches. The 25-year-old played 21 games internationally with Basel, including ten games in the Conference League and eleven games in qualifying for the competition.
