No points at the Betzenberg
Darmstadt 98 will return to southern Hesse empty-handed: 1. FC Kaiserslautern secured a 3-0 (1-0) victory on Saturday afternoon. Sauer (43') scored from close range just before halftime, and in the 64th minute, the Red Devils added another through Tazemeta. Berisha then sealed the win in stoppage time (90+4). Darmstadt 98 remain on just one point after four matchdays this season.
In the early stages, the home side had more of the play, although Darmstadt had the first shot on goal: After a good combination, Kai Klefisch got a shot away from distance, but ultimately fired well over the bar in the first minute. For Kaiserslautern, Ritter tried his luck twice from distance, but was first denied by Marcel Schuhen after 9 minutes and then shot over the goal with 12 minutes played.
As the game progressed, the visitors from southern Hesse gradually worked their way into the match. In the 29th minute, after a fine dribble, Noah Weisshaupt was brought down, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Lance Duijvestijn stepped up to take the penalty, but his powerful effort struck the crossbar and he couldn’t keep his header down on the rebound.
In the remaining minutes of the first half, the game was end-to-end with no clear-cut chances for either side. Kaiserslautern went ahead on 43 minutes as they capitalised on a good attack in the Darmstadt penalty area, and Sauer scored to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at halftime.
After the break, the home side regained control of the game, while Darmstadt struggled to find solutions. Ritter had the best chance for the hosts, but Schuhen was equal to the task and made the save, 7 minutes in the half. In the 64th minute, the hosts extended their lead when a deflected shot from Tazemeta trickled over the line.
Even in the remaining minutes, Darmstadt struggled to create any meaningful attacking opportunities and conceded a third goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, scored by Berisha.
