“Not an undeserved victory, but also the necessary luck”

The Lilies came back from a 0-1 deficit against Eintracht Braunschweig and turned it into a 2-1 victory. How would you sum up the 90 minutes at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor? Probably something like this: a tricky first half and a powerful, dominant second. The protagonists saw it similarly—albeit in more detail—afterward. We've compiled all the comments on the game for you.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„We definitely didn’t play our best, but that was also due to a very unpleasant opponent. We controlled the game in the first 20 minutes. The goal came out of nowhere, and we let it unsettle us a bit. We changed things up at halftime, which gave us more control. Overall, I’d say the win wasn’t undeserved, but we also had the necessary luck in one or two situations today. Congratulations to Braunschweig for their performance. We know we have to continue improving our football, but that’s always easier when you’ve found a way to get the three points. And we did that today.“

Heiner Backhaus:

„Considering that we were playing in that configuration and formation for the first time, we played a good game. We didn’t undeservedly score the opening goal, but we failed to push harder for the second goal. In the second half, we knew Darmstadt would come out of the locker room differently. But we still conceded almost nothing. Then they got the equaliser through a great move from the striker, who reacted quicker. We had another chance after that, but ultimately conceded another goal in a move that we simply should have been cleared. However, based on their performance, I can’t blame my team.“

Fabian Nürnberger:

„We wanted to go in with a lot of energy today, as we knew Braunschweig was a very physical team. We weren’t able to capitalise on that in the first half. We could have played more courageously. Overall, the first half was rather lacking in chances, but we still fell behind badly. Towards the end of the first half, we played more courageously and let them run more. We were able to continue that in the second half and created some good chances. We also played purposefully going forward. Overall, it was a nasty game, but still a deserved win.“

Matej Maglica:

„The first half was unnecessarily hectic and unsettled. But in the second half, we played well and deserved to win. You have to work hard to come back, especially in football. Two weeks ago in Kaiserslautern, we didn’t have that momentum, and today it was. I also know what we can achieve in a week, and that’s why we deserve this win as a team and a club.“

… about his goal:

„I’m known for having a powerful shot. I hoped I’d be allowed to take the free kick. At first, I wasn’t sure whether Rafa or Killian would want to shoot. But then Vuko came from the bench with instructions that I should take it. I took the ball, and my goal was to score. And that worked out.“

However, Guardiola wasn't quite the first in Germany to bring this style of play to the league. Over 90 years ago, it was the team from Gelsenkirchen that laid the foundations for tiki-taka in Germany – albeit under a different name.
