Nothing in Wolfsburg
An early VfL double strike put the Lilies on the path to a loss early on before a goal in stoppage time sealed it: SV 98 lost 0:3 (0:2) to VfL Wolfsburg.
The opening phase of the away game at VfL Wolfsburg clearly went to the home team. Although the Lilies had the first good opportunity of the game through Tim Skarke on 5 minutes as a lovely ball from Justvan gave him space but the effort was wide, a little later Wolfsburg struck with a double strike: Wimmer on 8 minutes and Wind after 11 made it 2-0 early on.
In the period that followed, the hosts controlled possession well and the Darmstadt team rarely found chances to attack. Overall, the game presented itself as largely without any great chances to score.
It was only two minutes before the break that Skarke had a chance after a pass from the returning Marvin Mehlem, he aimed for the far corner, but flicked the ball over the goal. Right on the whistle, Darmstadt had their next chance through Fabian Nürnberger who tried a free kick and forced Casteels into a brilliant save in the Wolfsburg goal. A little later, VfL went into the locker room with a well-deserved lead.
After the break, Wolfsburg initially had more attempts, but they weren’t really dangerous and didn’t trouble Alexander Brunst. The game showed little change compared to the first half; there were no real highlights on either side.
It was only after a little more than an hour that a ball came dangerously into the box again, but Brunst was there and directed a long-range shot from Arnold towards the corner on 61 minutes. About a quarter of an hour before the end of the game, substitute Mathias Honsak caused danger, but his deflected attempt was deflected over the crossbar after 77 minutes.
In the third minute of stoppage time, Cerny made it 3-0 for Wolfsburg as he volleyed home at the far post.
