„Once again we failed to take advantage of our opportunities“

The Lilies return to South Hesse without a point. SV Darmstadt 98 lost 2-1 at Ulm's Donaustadion. How do Marcel Schuhen and Clemens Riedel assess the 90 minutes against Ulm? What do the two head coaches have to say about the game? We've compiled all the comments for you.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„Congratulations to Ulm on a well-deserved home win. Why deserved? Not because of the balance of chances; we had the better chances. But we simply have to score the goals. Ulm deserved a home win because they felt the game and knew exactly when it was important to score. Ulm put in a tremendous, combative and self-sacrificing performance, and were particularly clever towards the end. We, on the other hand, once again failed to capitalise on our chances. We gave Ulm the gift of conceding the first goal, which they then accepted. Now we urgently need to pick up points. We are still eight points ahead of Ulm and will go into the next few weeks with a lead. Now it’s all about keeping our minds sharp and our performance high.“

Robert Lechleiter:

„The first quarter of an hour was a testing period, and we struggled. Darmstadt then had a huge chance through Lidberg. But after that, we won many challenges, had more possession, and knew we could do better. At halftime, we told ourselves we needed that opener and the feeling we could win games again. After that, we had to defend until the end; it was a relegation battle. You have to fight back and maybe even cleverly turn the clock. Overall, we’re very happy to have won the game today.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„It was a typical game where you can’t concede a goal. And we conceded two goals too easily. Ulm fought for every blade of grass. In the first half, we didn’t take advantage of our 100% chances. After the break, we unnecessarily lost possession before the 1 – 0. After the 2 – 0, it was difficult, even though we continued to try our best with long balls. We were aware of the importance of the game. But we lost. Now we have to quickly make sure we do better at home next weekend. We have to get points. We have to be aware of the situation – and we are.“

Clemens Riedel:

„Respect to Ulm, they played smart today. It’s bitter that we’re chasing a 2-0 deficit. We could have taken the lead in the first half. We played well in the final third and created chances, which unfortunately didn’t go our way. We need to be more consistent and simply score goals. Defensively, we couldn’t win the second balls. And when you lose the second balls, Ulm gets chances. We had to clear the ball before the 1-0, and the 2-0 was a silly goal. Overall, it was a game you shouldn’t lose. We have to look down. Everyone has to be aware that we still need points to get out of the bottom. We have crucial weeks ahead of us, in which we have to show more and be dirtier.“
