Opposition Check: Eintracht Braunschweig

Eintracht Braunschweig. A name that is firmly anchored in German football history. As a founding member of the Bundesliga, the club was part of the first division for years and even won the German championship in 1967. The birth of jersey advertising is also linked to the lions, as the Braunschweig team was the first club to enter a playing field with a sponsor on their chest in March 1973. Eintracht is currently playing in its third second division season in a row, and staying in the league is also the traditional club's declared goal this season.

In the past two seasons, Eintracht Braunschweig only managed to stay in the league late. This is also the desired goal in the third second division season in a row.

On May 12th, the 33rd matchday, Eintracht welcomed SV Wehen Wiesbaden this year. The initial situation was clear: a win would ensure Daniel Scherning’s team stayed in the league. In a close encounter, Thórir Helgason’s goal secured a narrow 1-0 win and ensured Braunschweig remained in the league. The positive end to a furious comeback, after all the Lions only had five points to their name after twelve match days and were in last place in the table. Daniel Scherning took over the reins on matchday 13 and led the team out of the bottom of the table.

This season too, the start of the season for the Braunschweig team was anything but positive, after four match days there are still no points on the credit side, 18th place in the table is the result. But the previous season in particular has proven that Eintracht always tries everything to fight their way out of a difficult situation.

We’ll take a closer look at SV Darmstadt 98’s upcoming opponent before the duel on Saturday (September 14th). Eintracht Braunschweig in the opponent check.

The Coach

“With Daniel we have got a coach who always finds the right words,” said Ermin Bičakčić, captain of the “Lions”, in an interview with NDR. The captain’s praise makes it clear that Scherning has reached out to his team since day one was also able to celebrate corresponding successes. Tactical flexibility, a positive attitude and tireless commitment are just some of the attributes that can be attributed to the Paderborn native.

Scherning started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Arminia Bielefeld II. The now 40-year-old remained active at the Alm in various roles (scout, U19 head coach) until the winter of 2016, before becoming assistant coach of the SC Paderborn professional team in December 2016 became. During his time at Pader, Scherning particularly attested to Steffen Baumgart, who was head coach at SCP from April 2017 to June 2021.

After positions as head coach at Arminia Bielefeld and VfL Osnabrück, Scherning has been in primary responsibility at Braunschweig since November 2023 and ultimately led the team to stay in the league in the previous season despite a difficult starting situation.

Strength

Despite the pointless start to the season, Braunschweig has the fourth best tackle rate (50.93) in the league. With Paul Jaeckel, Ermin Bicakcic and Robert Ivanov, the team has an extremely experienced defensive line, and the midfielders Robin Krauße and Sven Köhler are also known for their strength in duels. For the Lilies it will also be a matter of fully engaging in the duels with the Lions in order to ultimately retain the three points at the Bölle.

All Eyes on ...

Rayan Philippe. When Eintracht Braunschweig signed the Frenchman in July 2023, the transfer didn’t really make any big headlines. The attacker provided sensational statistics in the previous season. The man from Nice scored 32 goals and 26 assists for the Luxembourg first division club Swift Hesperange, who were able to secure the championship for the first time in the club’s history thanks in particular to Philippe.

But there is certainly a clear difference in quality between Luxembourg’s top division and the second division in Germany, so the legitimate question arose as to whether Philippe would be able to make the jump. After 14 months in Braunschweig, the answer can be a clear “yes”.

“He is fast, dribbling strong and dangerous in scoring – these are exactly the qualities that should make our offense more variable and dangerous,” said Eintracht sports director Peter Vollmann when signing him. And the rocket (top speed 35.44 km/h) ignited. The 23-year-old scored 13 goals in the previous season, and the left-footer flourished, especially after the appointment of head coach Daniel Scherning. Philippe has already scored in the current season, but he was unable to prevent Eintracht from making a false start.
