Opposition Check: SC Preußen Münster

On the simple parade ground on the outskirts of Münster – where the military usually holds its exercises – there are no soldiers to be seen today. Instead, a few boys in far too large trousers are chasing after a leather ball. In this place, without realising it, they are writing the first chapter in the history of SC Preußen Münster.

On April 30, 1906, students of what is now the Johann-Conrad-Schlaun-Gymnasium founded the club „FC Preußen Münster.“ Their first playing field was the parade ground at Loddenheide – sparse and bumpy, but for the students, it marked the beginning of a great adventure. Just one year later, on August 8, 1907, they were admitted to the West German Football Association. However, their hoped-for promotion to the top division was thwarted by an objection from FC Münster 04, which was only two years old at the time. Thus, Preußen Münster started in the third division – and immediately caused a sensation.

As early as the 1906/07 season, they became champions of their league, ahead of SC Preußen Hamm and SuS Hamm. Although they lost the final round match against SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler 1-2, they still managed to gain promotion to the B-League. Their success continued there: in the B-League championship final, they achieved perfect revenge – a 6-0 victory against Gelsenkirchen-Hessler. However, disillusionment followed in the A-League. With only seven points from twelve games, the club finished last in the table. Thanks to a reorganisation of the league districts, the club nevertheless remained in the top division. A few years later, in the 1913/14 season, Preußen celebrated their first major regional triumph: Westphalian champions – ahead of an opponent that would give them a rivalry for generations to come: 1. FC Arminia Bielefeld.

In 1916, the club moved from Loddenheide to a cow pasture on Hammer Straße – an unassuming location that would later become a symbol of Münster football. After the First World War, the club experienced a significant upswing here. With its growing membership, the club adopted the name „SC Preußen Münster“ in 1920.

The following decades were marked by frequent league restructuring and the turmoil of the time. But the core of the club remained. Today, SC Preußen Münster stands for passion, consistency, and a close connection between the city and the club. The stadium on Hammer Straße, renovated and modernised several times, is still the place where generations of fans support their Eagles. Currently, the Eagles are in tenth place in the 2. Bundesliga. All the more reason to take a closer look at SC Preußen Münster in our opponent analysis.

All Eyes on ...

When Paul Jaeckel takes off his football boots after an intense training session on the pitch, he often reaches for his camera – photography is his quiet passion alongside sports.

Paul Jaeckel was born on July 22, 1998, in Eisenhüttenstadt. He started playing football there as a child with Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl. He joined the club at around the age of five, laying the foundation for his football career. In 2011, he moved to the youth academy of Energie Cottbus to further his development. Three years later, in 2014, he took the next step: Jaeckel transferred to VfL Wolfsburg, where he played for the U17 and U19 teams. This allowed him to establish a solid foundation at a young age – gaining initial experience in organised youth football and receiving training with a clear future.

From August 2017, Jaeckel moved up to VfL Wolfsburg’s reserve team and played in the Regionalliga (fourth tier). In 2018, he made the step into professional football, transferring to then-second-division side SpVgg Greuther Fürth. This marked the beginning of an important chapter in his career. He established himself in Fürth and played regularly – over several seasons, he made numerous appearances and developed steadily as a centre-back.

His talent did not go unnoticed: in 2021, he transferred to Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin on a free transfer. This move marked a significant milestone. At Union, Jaeckel gained valuable experience: he not only played in the Bundesliga but also internationally – in the UEFA Conference League, the UEFA Europa League, and even the UEFA Champions League. This international experience not only fostered his athletic development but also proved that Jaeckel could compete at the highest level. In 2024, he was loaned to second-division side Eintracht Braunschweig until the summer of 2025.

In the summer of 2025, Paul Jaeckel began a new chapter: He transferred from 1. FC Union Berlin to second-division side Preußen Münster. The club sees him as an important addition to their central defence. With his experience, playing style, and mentality, he is expected to help bring stability and quality to the team.
