“Our phases not used”

No points against one of the top teams in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Lilies lose against 1. FC Magdeburg 1:2. The home team got into the game well and deservedly took the lead. But the increasing number of chances for the guests turned the score around. Accordingly disappointed – especially because SV 98 pushed for the equaliser in the last 20 minutes, but didn't have luck on their side – the Darmstadt protagonists have given their opinions. We have summarised all the voices about the game for you.

Florian Kohfeldt:

Congratulations to Magdeburg and Christian on their victory. We had the clearer chances to score when we were better in the first half. It’s a shame we’re only leading 1-0. Through Marseiler, Corredor and Hornby we had great chances to score more goals. But then we lost control, but there were no fireworks of chances for the FCM. The two goals conceded before and shortly after the break were very annoying, as we lost the assignment and Magdeburg also played well. They are a team that is one of the top teams in the league in terms of style of play and structure. But we stayed brave in the second half and didn’t allow ourselves to be knocked down. A draw would have been at least deserved over the 90 minutes. But we didn’t use our phases to win the game. Magdeburg, on the other hand, did exactly that.

Christian Titz:

„It was a game that had different phases. Today we faced an opponent who had a lot of quality in their ranks. We didn’t start the game well. Darmstadt outplayed us to get into the box so dangerously. After, we needed a few minutes to manage the deficit, but then we regained control of the game and created more and more chances to score. After the break, we wanted to put more pressure on the opponent and then we no longer had the determination to make it. It was a different game after the sending off. It was important that we showed resilience. We didn’t allow anything for a long time, but Darmstadt still had some good chances that our goalkeeper was able to save.“

Clemens Riedel:

„We are of course disappointed after the defeat. We put a lot of pressure on, especially from the back, and hoped that we could still make it 2-2. Overall, Magdeburg put a lot of pressure on over a certain period of time. They always play well, especially from the back, which is their great strength. If we run behind the front and the defence falls further and further, it will be difficult to concede the goal to make it 1-1. Ultimately, we had good chances, it’s a shame that we didn’t have the luck we needed at the end.“

Kai Klefisch:

„It hurts that we couldn’t give the fans a home win. We started the game well. We scored the goal in the early stages, clearly had the better chances and should have made it 2-0. Then Magdeburg got it, of course they have a special style of play – with a lot of dribblers who are difficult to defend. When we conceded a goal in the first half, the goal was unnecessary. Nevertheless, we continued to fight and then had a man advantage. It was also forced to a certain extent because we had the advantage in terms of football and it was a one-goal game – unfortunately not with the luck on our side. Still, we didn’t have a bit of luck on our side I’m proud of the team, how we held up and created our chances to score against a top opponent. These things should be put in the foreground.“
