Point Gained
The Lilies get their next away point with a 1-1 draw in Bremen. Julian Justvan equalised in the first half for the South Hesse team, which meant they scored points away from home again.
In the opening stages both sides had an effort: after a few seconds Romano Schmid missed from a good position and on the other side Matej Maglica tried twice from corners, but without much danger. Overall, Bremen set the tone at the start of the game. They then took the lead; in the eighth minute of the game, Christoph Zimmermann tried to clear a cross with Justin Njinmah lurking but could only slide the ball into his own net.
After 18 minutes, the referee awarded a penalty for the home team. VAR intervened and the penalty was overturned after images clearly showed no contact between Marvin Ducksch and Marcel Schuhen. The Bremen striker was also shown a yellow card for his dive.
The 98ers had a hard time at first and rarely found a way through. They worked their way into the game laboriously and in small steps. After a successful combination, Marvin Mehlem played it to Sebastian Polter in the penalty area, our shot first time but it was comfortable for Zetterer in the Bremen goal on 32 minutes. A minute later though, we drew level. Matthias Bader won the ball high up the pitch and switched play to Julian Justvan who arrowed a low effort into the bottom corner.
With the equaliser, the Lilies‘ share of the game increased and gradually grew further into the game but both sides went into the interval level.
Marvin Mehlem should have put us ahead in the 47th minute. A lovely through ball released him but he shot high over the bar from the edge of the area.
Werder hit back though and on the hour mark, Schuhen was called into action for the first time. Njinmah was denied with Schuhen at full stretch. The game increased in competitiveness but lacked clear chances. Tim Skarke saw a goal chalked off after 78 minutes for offside after Zetterer had pushed away an effort from Sebastian Polter.
The game was encapsulated in added time, Mehlem was unable to continue in added time and we finished with ten men. However, the endeavour of Skarke saw him chase a pass to Zetterer and the clearance was played off Skarke who chased the ball and rolled it home. However, VAR chalked the goal off for a handball against Skarke.
