Points Shared in Paderborn
Darmstadt 98 and SC Paderborn drew 2-2 (0-2) away from home on matchday 17, heading into the winter break with a point away from home. Richter and Corredor scored for Darmstadt in the first half. The team from southern Hesse has thus amassed a strong 33 points at the halfway point of the season.
Darmstadt got off to a dream start against SC Paderborn: Marco Richter put the South Hessians ahead in the 4th minute. After a long ball from Kai Klefisch, Sergio López crossed from the right flank, his cross finding Isac Lidberg, who chested the ball back for Richter. His effort was deflected beyond the ‚keeper.
Just five minutes later, Darmstadt almost doubled their lead. After a misplaced pass in the Paderborn defence, Richter got another shot away, but his effort went just wide on 9 minutes. After a quarter of an hour, the hosts created their first dangerous opportunity, but the shot was easily saved by Marcel Schuhen.
In the following minutes, Darmstadt largely controlled the game and circulated the ball amongst themselves. It wasn’t until the 26th minute that they had their next chance, when Lidberg got his head to a cross, but he put the ball over the bar.
The Darmstadt players then largely controlled the game and circulated the ball amongst themselves. The home team found their way into the match better and recorded longer periods of possession, but did not create any dangerous scoring opportunities against a stable Lilies defence.
Instead, the South Hessians struck again with clinical precision: After a cross from the byline, Richter’s initial shot was blocked. However, the rebound fell to Killian Corredor, who made it 2-0 . With this well-deserved two-goal lead for the South Hessians, both teams headed to the dressing rooms shortly afterward.
After the break, Paderborn were more purposeful and pulled a goal 9 minutes into the second half. Baur was played in by a pass into space, fired a shot from the edge of the box, and his well-placed effort left Schuhen with no chance. Five minutes later, the home side came close to equalising, but Schuhen was on hand to prevent a second goal.
It wasn’t until the 64th minute that the 98ers were able to break free from Paderborn’s pressure phase for the first time and had the opportunity to store the two goal lead: After a cross, Luca Marseiler didn’t get enough power behind the ball and the defence was able to clear for a corner.
Darmstadt struggled to relieve the pressure, and in the 84th minute, Bätzner’s header struck Klefisch’s arm. After reviewing the video footage, the referee awarded Paderborn a penalty. Klass confidently converted to make it 2-2.
There was to be no other clear cut chances in the game so Darmstadt could travel back with a point in their bag.
