Pokal Dream ends in Bremen
Unfortunately, the Bundesliga team has the upper hand: In the round of 16 of the DFB Cup, the Lilies had to admit defeat to SV Werder Bremen 0-1 (0-0). SV 98 gave the Bundesliga club a thrilling fight, but a goal from Jung (90+4) swung the pendulum in favour of the favored hosts.
Compared to the last league games, coach Florian Kohfeldt relied on a three-man defence in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. In the opening minutes, SV Werder Bremen initially had more possession of the ball, but the Lilies were waiting for a counterattack. The hosts had the first attempt after seven minutes, but Friedl’s shot was no problem for Marcel Schuhen.
After a good quarter of an hour, the Darmstadt team began to see a little more of the ball and increasingly found their way out of their own half. And the guests also approached the opponent’s box for the first time: Killian Corredor put a ball into Isac Lidberg’s path, but the Swede was unable to get the ball on goal under pressure on 16 minutes.
Overall, Werder had more of the game, but the South Hesse team hardly allowed any shots and repeatedly caused danger. The decisive point of the game came in the 34th minute, a long ball released Lidberg who was brought down by Robin Zetterer. After pondering his decision, the referee opted for a yellow card which was perhaps fortunate for the Bundesliga side. After a concentrated performance against the Bundesliga club, we went into the locker room without any goals.
The second half began with two brilliant saves from Marcel Schuhen: First, the Lilien goalkeeper parried a direct shot from Ducksch, then he also fended off Schmid’s follow-up shot, 2 minutes into the half. After that, the game continued to be the same as in the first section: advantages for Bremen, good defensive work by the Lilies and therefore few shots.
In the 59th minute of the game, the 98ers also had their first shot in the second period: Corredor tried from a distance, but Zetterer was able to make the save. The South Hessians kept coming back to their actions in the opponent’s half, but failed to create any major chances.
In the final phase, the hosts increased the pressure further, but the Darmstadt team now delivered a real cup fight and threw themselves into every ball. When everyone had already prepared for extra time, the home team managed to score the winning goal through Jung in the fourth minute of added time as he converted from close range. Despite a strong fighting performance, the Lilies had to narrowly admit defeat.
