Sergio Lopez in Portrait
The fifth newcomer for the 2024/25 season is defender Sergio Lopez. The 25-year-old was born in Remscheid, but then enjoyed his football training with Real in Madrid. We took a closer look at our wing player and would like to introduce you to Sergio.
A royal for the SVD! South Hesse’s new full-back, Sergio Lopez, was trained by Real Madrid in their youth ranks and most recently played in Switzerland for FC Basel. Now it’s time for the 25-year-old German-Spanish player to come to the Merck Stadium at the Böllenfalltor: “I had very good discussions with those responsible and felt great interest in the club from the first second. I am a big fan of German football and am looking forward to my time with the Lilies.”
The 98 fans can look forward to a defender with international experience. Lopez played ten games for Basel in the Conference League, plus eleven games in qualifying for the same competition. After three years in Switzerland’s third largest city, he is now taking the step back to his country of birth. The right-footed man was born in Remscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia and lived there for four years.
So now he’s going back to Germany. “My father likes watching German football, so I always watch games from here with him. “That’s why I know a little bit about German football,” says the Lilies’ new number two in the first interview.
The 25-year-old has a strong footballing background; Lopez wore the Real jersey for five years. “It was incredible to play for Real Madrid, every player there is of high quality and I was able to learn a lot from the other boys,” says the wing back, who once trained with the first team around Kroos, Ramos and Co. He learned the most from Daniel Carvajal; Lopez was able to communicate directly with the world-class defender in Spanish.
Welcome to Darmstadt, Sergio!
