It was a pleasure, San Antonio!
The Lilien will be in San Antonio from September 25th to October 1st. In this USA diary, we will keep you updated on the trip and SV 98's experiences.
A fitting victory for the Lilies: SV 98 prevailed 7–0 (4–0) against San Antonio FC. Lee, Smit (twice), Duijvestijn, Kehl, El Kadiri, and Herbst scored for the South Hessian side.
Florian Kohfeldt: „I view the result positively, even though we naturally know it wasn’t the level of opposition we might typically expect. We showed good patterns in our play, particularly in the first half. What we need to do a bit better is maintain our rhythm. Overall, though, we kept a clean sheet and the margin of victory was deserved. The combination of matches and training sessions during the international break allowed us to put in a solid block of work. Now, with a full week of training ahead, we’re focusing entirely on Cottbus.“
It was a rather one-sided affair from the start, with the ‚Lilies‘ finding the net early on. Duijvestijn scored on the rebound to make it 1–0 after Smit had hit the post just seconds earlier. Two minutes later, Lee doubled the lead from close range (14′). Around the 20-minute mark, the hosts managed their first attempt on goal, but Schuhen was equal to the shot aimed at his near post. At the other end, Lee squared the ball to his fellow forward Smit, who had a simple tap-in to make it 3–0 (23′).
Just before the half-hour mark, Schuhen was called into action again, with Santi testing the Lilies‘ captain via a shot on the turn. It was only a brief spell of resistance, however, as play soon returned exclusively to SAFC’s half. SV 98 created further chances against clearly overwhelmed hosts but failed to extend their lead any further. Shortly before the break, Smit bagged his second goal of the match, sending the teams into the dressing rooms at 4–0.
After the restart, Kehl kicked off the scoring (53′). At the other end, SAFC also had a golden opportunity, but Brunst came out on top in the one-on-one situation. Richter missed the chance to make it 6–0 from the penalty spot (63rd minute). It was therefore El Kadiri who completed the half-dozen following an assist from Furukawa (69th minute). In stoppage time, Herbst rounded off the scoring to make it 7–0.
