Three Wins a Row!
The Lilies‘ run continues! On Friday evening, SV 98 convincingly defeated Dynamo Dresden 2-0 (1-0). Lidberg set the stage for victory in the first half (37th minute), and Hornby added another shortly after the break (48th minute). After seven matches, the South Hesse club has already collected 16 points, maintaining their top spot.
The home game against Dynamo Dresden took some time to get going. Initially, there was little action in either penalty area, with both teams working well against the ball. The Lilies showed great possession, but their attacks lacked the final touch.
The first good opportunity belonged to the home side: Leon Klassen, a first-time starter in the starting eleven, sent Fraser Hornby on his way with a long ball, but his direct shot sailed over the goal on 22 minutes. After that, Darmstadt increasingly took control of the game, repeatedly approaching the visitors‘ goal without posing any real threat. Until the 37th minute, it was Isac Lidberg again who was on the spot. Marco Richter won the ball and played it perfectly into the path of the Swede, who remained ice-cold in the penalty area despite being under pressure to score the 1-0 for SVD.
In stoppage time, the Lilies had another great chance to make it 2-0: Hornby’s cross was blocked at the last moment. Darmstadt went into the break with a narrow lead.
Two minutes after the break, Hornby again had a shot on goal, but his header, following a lobbed ball, landed on the roof of the net. A minute later, the Scotsman finally rewarded himself with his first goal of the season: After a through ball from Killian Corredor, the striker kept his cool and made it 2-0.
After the second goal, the Lilies clearly controlled the game and came close to scoring again in the 57th minute: After a one-two with Isac Lidberg, Fraser Hornby shot, but the Dresden goalkeeper tipped the ball around the post. Three minutes later, Lidberg and Hornby countered, and this time the Swede shot, but Schreiber also saved it.
The home team maintained control throughout the remainder of the game, conceding little and remaining a threat, even if they failed to create any real chances. In the end, the 98ers secured a comfortable home victory.
