Traditional team: Lilies beat FC Barcelona

The dreary October weather in Darmstadt? No thanks. Under the bright Catalan sun and at a summery 25 degrees, two traditional teams met last Friday (October 4th/1:30pm) at the FC Barcelona training ground, the “Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper”,: The Lilies faced the legends of FC Barcelona for an exciting duel in the Spanish metropolis.

The idea for this particular match started as a joke. After the Lilies had already played against Real Madrid, “we joked about it and said, now we have to play against the big FC Barcelona and the joke turned serious,” said Rafael Förster, a player from the traditional team who has good contacts with Spain sv98.de reported.

The team from Darmstadt traveled to Spain last Thursday (October 3rd) and moved into their rooms in Barcelona. Together with some fans and friends who had traveled with them, the traditional SV 98 team got in the mood for the upcoming game at the harbour and enjoyed local food and one or two cool drinks with a view of the sea.

Chatting with Hansi Flick

Even before kick-off, the traditional Lilien team was expecting a special highlight: Hansi Flick, former national coach and current head coach of FC Barcelona, welcomed the team to the Spanish first division club’s sports grounds and exchanged ideas with the players. But the encounter had even more surprises in store. Both teams gave each other gifts and exchanged souvenirs: the Lilies received pins with the Barcelona coat of arms, a book with all the Barcelona players, a signed ball and a traditional pennant. The hosts, for their part, received pennants and pins as well as special drinking bottles with the logos of both clubs and a three-liter Krombacher bottle with the club’s coat of arms and the date of the match day.

The Lilies‘ special jersey designed for this game also left a lasting impression. In collaboration with supplier Craft, the jersey was lovingly designed down to the last detail: the Catalan and Hessian flags were emblazoned on the back – and the emblems of both clubs and the date of the encounter were incorporated on the chest. The 98 limited edition jerseys will be auctioned off for a good cause in the future.

Four Lily goals against Barca

In the game itself, Barcelona initially took a 1-0 lead and maintained this score until halftime.  But a motivating speech during the break gave the Darmstadt team new impetus. The team gained noticeable momentum through tactical substitutions, especially of Fouad Brighache, Zivojin Juskic and Toni Sailer. Thanks to goals from Thomas Süß, Rafael Förster and a brace from Dennis Weiland, the Lilies finally left the pitch as winners with a deserved 4-1.

After the game, the team celebrated the successful day with dinner on the roof of the former bullring Las Arenas, from where they enjoyed breathtaking views over the whole of Barcelona.

What's next?

The traditional team will continue to play exciting games in the region in the future and will try to build on their recent successes. And who knows, maybe there will be another international game for the Old Lilies in the future.

The traditional team would like to thank all supporters of the trip!

„The referee decided the game today.“

After 13 unbeaten second-division matches, SV Darmstadt 98 suffered their first defeat this Friday evening. Three unfortunate minutes just before halftime, during which Patric Pfeiffer was sent off and Vincent Vermeij scored twice, paved the way for Dresden's victory. After the match, the focus was primarily on the differing assessments of two very similar incidents by the refereeing team – incidents which both coaches subsequently evaluated identically.
