“Tried everything, left everything on the pitch”

The sensation didn't happen. Despite two goals, SV Darmstadt 98 ultimately lost to FC Bayern Munich 2:5 (1:2). The Darmstadt team showed a courageous and passionate performance, which, however, could not stand up to the brutal quality of Jamal Musiala and Co. What do the South Hesse protagonists say about the duel? How do the two head coaches classify the 90 minutes at the Böllenfalltor? We have summarised all the voices about the game for you.

Torsten Lieberknecht:

“We are disappointed that we lost the game. The boys showed a team performance today. Of course they also made mistakes, otherwise we wouldn’t have lost the game. But the defeat was one or two goals too high. But Munich have an exceptional team and an exceptional player in Jamal Musiala. We got in a lot of shots today, which was really important. After Bayern’s double strike in the first half, we could have made it 2-2 with Oscar Vilhelmsson’s hit on the crossbar. Overall, you could tell in the stadium that there was a sense of cohesion. If we want to achieve something great, which is still possible, we should keep believing and not let up as a community in this difficult league and this challenging season.

Thomas Tuchel:

“We are happy about the away win. We were able to create great chances to score throughout the entire season. That’s why we deserved to score so many goals. When the score was 0-1 and Darmstadt had chances in the first half, we weren’t attentive enough. We were too comfortable in possession and that is why Darmstadt nearly doubled their lead. Manuel Neuer kept us in the game, and once it hit the crossbar. But we didn’t lose our heads, we continued to play forward and rewarded ourselves with goals.”

Tim Skarke:

„We were very compact at the beginning of the game. Honsi then had a good chance. We defended well at the back and threw ourselves into everything. We then take a 1-0 lead because Honsi sees me behind him. He could have finished it himself, but you could see the team spirit in this goal. After that, it was difficult to defend Bayern’s power. But we still have the chance to make it 2-2 before the break. We stuck with it and have never gave up. In the end, it was Bayern’s individual class. We never lost faith and performed as a team. That must give us courage. The fans also saw that we were fighting and standing on the pitch as a team .“

Fabian Holland:

„Even in a game like this, especially at home, you do some calculations in advance. But we also knew that almost everything had to work today and that many situations had to go our way. Unfortunately that didn’t happen that way. Nevertheless, the fans saw that we tried everything and left everything on the pitch. After the 1-0 win, you obviously have an even stronger feeling that something can happen, but the two goals before the break happened too quickly. These moments, like ours with a shot off the crossbar before the break had to fall on our side so that we could really have gotten something. Our fans showed their instinct once again today, and the moments after the final whistle also gave us courage for the tasks ahead.“
