U21’s show comeback qualities

Next point won thanks to good mentality. The SV Darmstadt 98 U21 team demonstrated their comeback qualities against 1. Hanauer FC last Sunday (August 11th) and secured another point with Georgios Makridis' late equaliser to make it 2-2 in the second minute of stoppage time.

Back in Alsbach and the South Hessians remain undefeated. After the encounters with Hünfelder FC (1:1) and KSV Baunatal (0:0), the Lilien U21 collected their third point against 1. Hanauer FC (2:2) on the third matchday of the 2024/25 Hessenliga season.

The Junglilien’s oldest team showed a strong performance in the first half. The blue and whites worked solidly in defense and at the same time created good chances in attack. Shortly before the break, Nico Baier (40th) gave the team the lead after an assist from Fabio Torsiello. But because the Hanau team equalised before the break, the score went into the locker room at 1-1.

“After the break there was a small misunderstanding in midfield that led to the ball being lost. And the opponent took advantage of this mistake to make it 1-2,” complained Daniel Petrowsky. The head coach of the U21s on the second half: “It was a wild game. Both teams had their chances.” But the 98ers kept at it and used all their strength and energy to equalise – with success. Georgios Makridis headed a cross from U21 captain Markus Ballmert into the net. “In the end it is a fair result,” concluded Petrovsky.

“With a young team, there are many points that we still have to work on. We have to continue to train with concentration and improve in all aspects step by step,” said the U21 head coach. He and his team will now be challenged again next Wednesday (August 14th). It’s against SV Unter-Flockenbach. The kick-off in Gorxheimertal takes place at 7pm.

Line-Up: Rohde – Arania (Schlosser, 80′), Sauer, Pfister, Arnold, Grbic, Ballmert (c), Streller (Makridis, 71′), Zelic, Baier (Gegg, 88′), Torsiello

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.
