Unbeaten Series Ends
For the first time since September, SV 98 ended a league game without points: The Lilies lost 2-1 (0-0) to SSV Jahn Regensburg.
The initial phase of the game at SSV Regensburg started quickly with action on both sides. Both teams got closer to the goal with shots, but they were hardly dangerous at first.
After 20 minutes it became really dangerous for the first time: Fraser Hornby teed up Luca Marseiler and his shot just missed the far post. Four minutes later, Breunig tried from a distance, but the deflected attempt flew over the box.
As the playing time progressed, the Lilies gained slight advantages up the field, but rarely managed to create opportunities from these. In the 34th minute, Hornby had an effort following a fine combination, but the keeper directed the Scot’s attempt over the crossbar.
Things hardly changed in the last few minutes before half-time, the Darmstadt team had difficulty finding a way through against strong Regensburg players and so they went into the break without any goals.
After the break, it only took a minute for the first good finish: after a corner, Clemens Riedel went up to head the ball and put the ball just over the crossbar. But Marcel Schuhen also had to intervene for the first time and parried a long-range shot from Huth in the 52nd minute. Overall, the home team developed a phase of pressure and took the lead after 65 minutes: Pröger scored with the help of the inside post to make it 1-0.
The 98ers tried to respond quickly, but rarely found space on the offensive. After 72 minutes, the Lilies had a bit of luck a seemingly harmless effort bobbled past Schuhen and struck the post before being cleared by Riedel.
Five minutes before the end, Hornby had the chance to equalise after a corner, but his header only landed in the arms of the keeper. Instead of the equaliser it was 2-0 a little later – Ganaus increased for the hosts as his effort bobbled up and over Schuhen in the first minute of added time.
But even after that, the Lilies didn’t give up and came close two minutes later: After a cross, Fynn Lakenmacher set up Kai Klefisch rifled home in the 3rd minute of added time. In the remaining minutes, one ball after the other flew into the Regensburg penalty area, but there was no further goal for the South Hesse team, so the SVD had to narrowly admit defeat in the end.
