The game day quote

Freiburg wants to enter European competitions. That's their agenda. For us, it will be crucial that we show that we want to fully invest ourselves in all areas.

Manager: Torsten Lieberknecht on the home game against Freiburg

The last encounter

The weather suited the season at Freiburg’s Europa Park stadium. At the end of November, Freiburg and Darmstadt drew 1-1 on the 12th matchday, partly in pouring rain.

After an initial phase without many highlights, the lilies showed themselves to be extremely efficient. The ball reached Marvin Mehlem via Matthias Bader, who in turn passed it through to Mathias Honsak. The Austrian’s shot was decisively deflected by a Freiburg defensive leg, so the ball rolled over the line to take the lead (18th). The 98ers‘ defense remained stable afterwards. Almost ten minutes before the end of the first period, the Breisgauer team got into the penalty area and scored straight away to equalise: Höler pushed the ball over the line from close range (35th). The halftime score was 1:1.

After the break, Freiburg appeared to be a more ball-dominant team, but the Lilies repeatedly had good chances, like Jannik Müller’s header (52′). Mehlem also had a chance to take the lead again, but his shot flew just past the post (65′). In the final phase, both teams tried to land the late winner and in stoppage time Eggestein tested Brunst with a header, but the keeper made a strong save, directing the ball over the crossbar (90th + 3) and thus secured the point win in Breisgau .

The opponent's opinion

Christian Streich, head coach of SC Freiburg, was unhappy with his team’s performance at home against Leipzig last week. „If we don’t defend better, we’ll have problems. Darmstadt always has action, always chances to score. Because they can play real football,“ said the 58-year-old at the press conference. Streich wants to see a reaction from his team: „We have to be very, very present and awake. We have to learn from the things we did wrong.“

The Officials

  • Referee: Sascha Stegemann
  • Assistants: Markus Schüller and Sven Waschitzki-Günther
  • Fourth Official: Richard Hempel
  • VAR: Robert Schröder and Rafael Foltyn

The Weather

In cloudy conditions at Böllenfalltor, the temperature climbs to a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. The chance of precipitation is 0 percent throughout the day.
