The Quote of the Matchday

We now want to get our second win in a row and continue to give the feeling that when we say goodbye, we want to do it properly.

Manager Torsten Lieberknecht before the home game against Heidenheim

The last encounter

The newcomer duel on the Heidenheimer Schlossberg began with good chances for the guests from southern Hesse. After just five minutes, Aaron Seydel headed the ball from a cross from Emir Karic and put the ball past the goal. As the game progressed, the game became fairly even with opportunities on both sides. Tim Skarke tried after 19 minutes from just outside the penalty area, but aimed too high. On the other side, Jan-Niklas Beste also tried from a distance but Schuhen could save in the 20th minute.

Three minutes before the half-time whistle, the Heidenheimers took advantage of a set piece and Schöppner gave the home team the lead with a header. An unfortunate deficit at the break, as the Lilies had actually had slight advantages up until then.

After the break, the Lilies had a good opportunity to equalise early on: Vilhelmsson turned sharply around his opponent, shot straight away and forced the keeper to make a save with 49 minutes played. Two minutes later, Pfeiffer prevailed in the header duel, but did not put enough force behind the ball. Then the Darmstadt team finally rewarded themselves for their effort after 52 minutes: Skarke took a long Holland ball out of the air and scored precisely to level. After an hour it was Lennard Maloney who directed a Skarke cross into his own net and thus steered the Lilies onto the apparent path to victory.

But the hosts equalised with their first goal in the second half: Mainka headed in from a corner to make it 2-2 on 69 minutes. Just 120 seconds later, Mainka gave the lead to FCH , again from a corner. In the remaining time, the Lilies could no longer find any means against the Heidenheim defence and had to narrowly admit defeat.

The opponent's opinion

“We also made it difficult for the opponents. That’s why we’re where we are now and still have the best prospects of being able to play in the Bundesliga next season,“ said Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt, summing up FCH’s situation before the 31st matchday. Nevertheless, the 50-year-old warns about the Lilies: “It will be an emotional game, a game where you cannot give in.” One thing is clear, according to the Heidenheim coach, the SVD “will give everything” for the three points on Sunday to keep in southern Hesse.
