Opposition Check: Eintracht Braunschweig

He needs a lot of sleep. That's why you often see him lying down. But when he rears up, weighing in at 200 kilograms, and moves his sandy-colored, 250-centimetre-long body, his elegance and majesty are hard to surpass. His roar can reach up to 114 decibels – as loud as a jackhammer. Muscular yet dynamic, with powerfully developed jaw muscles. An impressive sight! He is at the top of the food chain. He is the king of the jungle: the lion. His eyes are perfectly adapted for hunting at night.

Speaking of hunting: „The Lions,“ also known as Eintracht Braunschweig, are also on the hunt – hunting for points. The lion, the heraldic animal of the city of Braunschweig and the historical Duchy of Brunswick, is the central red symbol of the otherwise blue and yellow club crest. But back to the hunt: They’ve snagged 14 points from their last eight matches and are among the five most in-form teams in the 2. Bundesliga during this period. So, you should always be on your guard in their territory. They’ve grabbed 13 points from their last six home games. Their victories at home include wins against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Schalke 04. The current 14th-placed team has been recovering from its initial difficulties for some time now and is on course to climb out of the relegation zone.

Because when „the Lions“ get a whiff of an opportunity, things get unpleasant. It won’t be an easy task for Darmstadt. Braunschweig is playing on home turf with momentum on their side. Their recent form is clearly trending upwards. We’ve taken a closer look at Eintracht Braunschweig in our opponent analysis.

Highlight

When the ball is at rest, Eintracht Braunschweig rarely falters. Just five goals conceded from set pieces speak volumes. Only two teams in the 2. Bundesliga have a better record – Darmstadt 98 and Schalke 04 (both with four). Whether it’s a corner, a free kick, or a long throw-in: the team’s movements are fluid, the marking is precise, and their tenacity in challenges is palpable.

All Eyes on ...

Even as a child, Sidi Sané looked up to his older brother Leroy, who was then shining on the pitch for Bayern Munich and is now making his mark at Galatasaray in Istanbul. The time they spent together on the local pitch in Essen, the countless tricks Leroy demonstrated, were more than just playtime for Sidi – they were lessons, inspiration, and motivation all at once. „I always looked up to my brother, and even today he motivates me to improve,“ Sidi told the online portal „Ligazwei-online“.

This early role model shaped his ambition to forge his own identity on the pitch, far removed from the glare of his older brother. The now 22-year-old striker has pursued his own path with composure, self-confidence, and a clear vision. His father, Souleymane Sané, a former professional footballer and Senegalese international, remains a defining figure for him: „We talk on the phone after every match. He gives me a lot of tips, and we discuss what I can improve or how the training week went,“ explains the forward. His parents regularly accompany him to the stadium and even manage match attendance when he and his brother are playing on the same day – depending on who is playing where.

Born on April 21, 2003, in Essen, Sané’s footballing journey began at SG Wattenscheid 09 before he moved to the youth academy of FC Schalke 04 at the age of eight, following his time at Bayer Leverkusen. There, he received years of training. At Schalke’s youth academy, he progressed through all age groups and eventually made it to the reserve team, where he showcased his abilities in the Regionalliga West (fourth tier). Sané made his debut in German professional football in the Bundesliga for Schalke 04, coming on as a substitute in a match against FC Bayern Munich in December 2022 – a first glimpse of what was to come.

In the summer of 2023, the next defining step in his career followed: he transferred to Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2. Bundesliga, where he received the number 24 jersey. There, he is valued as a versatile, high-speed attacking player who can make an impact on the wings as well as through the middle. Despite a serious knee injury that sidelined him for the 2024/25 season, Sané fought his way back into the team with discipline and ambition, and in the summer of 2025, he extended his contract long-term until June 2027 – a sign of the club’s confidence in him. „I am very happy to have extended my contract with the Blue-Yellows. Over the past two years, I have received a lot of support from the club and the fans, even during difficult times,“ said Sané about his time in Braunschweig. With the support of his family, his high-quality training, and his willingness to constantly prove himself, Sidi Sané remains an interesting young professional whose further development will be worth watching.

Goal fest in Hanau: U21 wins 5-1

More crucial points. Away at 1. Hanauer FC, SV Darmstadt 98's U21 team delivered a convincing five-goal performance in their fight to avoid relegation. With this victory, the young Lilies have amassed twelve points from their last five matches. With two matchdays remaining, direct relegation is no longer a possibility, and the U21s hold a nine-point cushion above the relegation zone. However, Darmstadt need more points to further distance themselves from the relegation playoff spot.
