In the opening stages, the Lilien talents needed some time to settle into the game. Although the team initially lacked the necessary precision in key moments, the Lilien were rewarded shortly before the break: following a fine passing sequence and an assist from Kelvin Kunstmann, Milian Herbst scored the opening goal in the 41st minute, breaking the deadlock.
The hosts extended their lead immediately after the restart: Mika Schlosser put the Gießen defence under pressure, won the ball, and beat former Darmstadt goalkeeper Til Rohde to make it 2–0 (46th minute). SV 98 largely controlled the game thereafter and enjoyed plenty of possession, though without creating a multitude of clear-cut chances. Nevertheless, players such as Kelvin Kunstmann, Schlosser, Leonard Fenyoe (who had a double chance), and Loann Schnerring had opportunities to further increase the lead. At the other end, Benedikt Börner was called upon to make a serious save only once during the second half. Diogo Dos Santos Pereira rounded off the scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time; he finished a fine team move to make it 3–0, capping a strong second-half performance by the Lilies.
