The game day quote

The challenge in Leipzig is as big as it gets. The most important thing will be how much the boys are willing to believe in the things that we worked on very hard during the training week and implement them on Saturday.

The venue

Anyone who makes their way to the Leipzig stadium will see a completely atypical picture. After working your way up a few stairs, you then go straight back down before you cross a bridge into the stadium. But how did it happen?

The central stadium stood here until 1998. A sports facility that hosted athletics events, but primarily football matches. The “Stadium of a Hundred Thousand” takes its name from the attendance records broken here. An incredible 110,000 people saw the international match between the German Democratic Republic and Czechoslovakia in 1957. A year earlier, the attendance record for a league game was set here. The game between SC Rotation Leipzig and Lokomotive Leipzig was watched by 100,000 spectators. However, in 1994 the stadium had to be closed due to its dilapidated condition.

At the turn of the millennium, the foundation stone for today’s arena was laid by the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. The old wall of the central stadium was retained and the new venue was placed in the middle of it. To where the running track and court used to be. The new central stadium was finally opened in 2004 and since 2010 it has been Leipzig’s home stadium under a different name. After several renovation phases, the stadium located at the Elster basin offers a total capacity of 47,069 seats.
