The Quote of the Matchday:

The way I feel about Friday can be described in one word: Awesome!

Florian Kohfeldt, Manager of SV Darmstadt 98

The Stadium

The Veltins Arena is not only the home stadium of FC Schalke 04 this season. The second division team has been playing all of its home games there since 2001. But this year there is also international flair waiting for Gelsenkirchen. Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk will play their UEFA Champions League home games at the 62,271-seat arena. Opponents of the Ukrainians will be: Bayern Munich, Atalanta Bergamo, Young Boys Bern and Stade Brest.

The Schalke arena also has a special feature: on August 12, 2001, a cap was inaugurated in the catacombs – the first of its kind in Germany. Baptisms, weddings, funerals and ecumenical services take place there. “Well over 2,000 children have now been baptised here, 1,000 weddings and anniversaries have been celebrated, the deceased have been remembered, prayers have been prayed for and lights have been lit for victims of disasters,” it says on the arena’s official website.

The Opposition View

Karel Geraerts, the head coach of Schalke 04, at the press conference before the duel: „We have respect for Darmstadt. This is a team that played in the Bundesliga last season.“ The duel is particularly interesting for him because of a familiar face on the other side. After all, Geraets and Florian Kohfeldt’s paths have already crossed: „I know him from Belgium because he was the head coach in Eupen and we also played against each other in the winter preparation against Schalke. I think he is a good coach and against Braunschweig discovered some interesting things.“
