Round of 16! Lilies fight their way through.

With tremendous dedication, Darmstadt secured their place in the next round! The Lilies rewarded themselves for a tremendous fight and incredible defensive work by advancing to the round of 16. The final score was 2-0 (1-0) against SV Elversberg after 90 intense minutes in which the South Hessians suffered but fought tooth and nail against Elversberg's relentless onslaught. Kehl and Smit sealed the victory for Darmstadt's efficient performance.

The cup match against SV Elversberg began disastrously for Darmstadt: Nicolas Verkooijen got his foot caught in the turf after just a few minutes and had to be substituted due to injury. Ironically, it was substitute Lars Kehl who put Darmstadt ahead shortly afterward: Following a foul on Kai Klefisch, the midfielder fired a free kick from 25 metres into the net off the inside of the post with 6 minutes played.

Overall, the favourites from Saarland had more of the game in the opening phase, but it took a quarter of an hour for their first dangerous shot: Campbell fired from the edge of the penalty area, but Marcel Schuhen made the save. Eight minutes later, Schuhen was again on hand to deny the American’s next shot.

The Bundesliga side’s relentless pressure continued: The home team repeatedly created dangerous scoring opportunities. Darmstadt, on the other hand, struggled to relieve the pressure and lost possession too easily after winning the ball back. But Darmstadt defended passionately, throwing themselves into every challenge, and once again had a strong presence in goal in Marcel Schuhen, along with a good dose of luck. The result: a narrow lead at halftime.

Even after the break, the home side continued to press for the equaliser, and Le Joncour narrowly missed with a low shot from 16 metres which he should have scored, 4 minutes into the half. Darmstadt, on the other hand, were clinical and the lead was doubled on 56 minute: After a low corner from Lance Duijvestijn, Milan Smit ran in and slotted the ball home from close range to make it 2-0.

Elversberg remained dangerous, however, and in the 61st minute, the crossbar saved Darmstadt: Futkeu fired a shot from close range, but it only struck the woodwork. Against the deep-lying South Hessians, the Saarlanders found it increasingly difficult to break through and therefore often resorted to long-range shots – but without success.

With a passionate performance, the Lilies ultimately secured their place in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.
