„A thoroughly deserved defeat“

We have gathered reactions following the heavy away defeat against KSC.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„It was, of course, a well-deserved home win for KSC—there’s no point in sugarcoating that. It was a performance I didn’t see coming at all. Following a very strong second half against Cottbus and a great week of training, we failed to translate any of that onto the pitch today. To be fair, every shot KSC took early on ended up in the back of the net—though, in part, that was also down to us. KSC played with courage and intensity, and they pressed us effectively; they did that well. We couldn’t find any space, and even when we did, we failed to create anything from it. It’s not that everything we do is consistently poor, but our level of performance fluctuates wildly. Today, that fluctuation swung sharply in the wrong direction. We will certainly discuss this internally over the coming days, but, to be perfectly honest, our performance today is, in truth, inexplicable.“

Maximilian Senft:

„We took an early lead following a rehearsed attacking move that worked perfectly. The second goal was, of course, a huge boost for us. Darmstadt had a really good chance after that, but they failed to convert it. Right after the break, we scored to make it 3-0, and in the end, it’s a very well-deserved victory that we’re really happy about.“

Marco Richter:

„To be honest, it’s very difficult to find the right words. We have only ourselves to blame for this defeat. We invited KSC in too often—at times, it was far too easy for them. We weren’t decisive or courageous enough. We knew what was at stake in this match, and we’d had a good week of training, but we simply failed to translate that onto the pitch. The defeat is certainly deserved. We didn’t get in front of their goal often enough; we need to create many more chances.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„A clear and thoroughly deserved defeat. Our fundamentals were an absolute disaster. Today, far too many players failed to grasp how second-division football works. This wasn’t about playing pretty football on a poor pitch—that’s no excuse; we have to accept the reality of the situation. Furthermore, it was an issue of energy. Karlsruhe won every second ball and threw themselves into every challenge. You could sense KSC’s nervousness early on, but we were completely unable to capitalise on it. It was a catastrophic away performance. On the second goal, I should have held onto the ball—that just sums up today’s match. It really wasn’t good enough. Everyone can have an off day, but not like this. It’s deeply disappointing.“
