Defeat in Dresden
SV Darmstadt 98 lost their first away game of the season. The Lilies were defeated 1–0 by Dynamo Dresden after conceding an early goal.
The Lilies have lost their first away game of the new season. We have summarised the post-match reactions for you.
„Congratulations to Dynamo on a well-deserved home win. It was a very intense match overall, though likely not the most entertaining to watch on TV given the lack of clear-cut chances. Nevertheless, I felt both teams tried to play constructive football. Dynamo built up the play nicely for their goal, even though I see moments where we should have stopped it and won the duels. Their lead was deserved as a result. There were no further chances in the first half after that, despite both sides trying. That was also our problem last week: lacking pace and failing to create enough chances when in possession.
Dynamo had the momentum at the start of the second half, but it shifted our way for a spell of 15 to 20 minutes after that. However, Dresden defended very well in a deep block. The sending-off (second yellow card) then killed our momentum. Dynamo had one big chance late on, which Schuh saved brilliantly. All in all, it was a deserved victory for Dynamo.
We knew before the season started that it would take time to re-establish those automatic patterns of play, especially in the final third. We’re seeing that now, even though we would have liked things to go differently. But we certainly aren’t getting nervous about it; we know it will come. We’ll keep working on it and are now looking forward to the match in Jena. We’re determined to reach the next round there.“
„We settled into the game very well in the first half, even if there weren’t any clear-cut chances. We were winning the ball back, though, and if we’d been cleaner in the final third, we could have created some good moments. We found a bit more space in those areas than Darmstadt did. We took the lead, and while we didn’t offer much going forward after that, we didn’t give much away at the back either. We came out of the dressing room really well after the break. I felt it was a very balanced and intense match. However, with the man advantage, I would have liked to see us exert more control. After last week, we’re very pleased to have picked up points today, and in my opinion, the way we played was excellent once again.“
„When we lose a match, there aren’t many positives to take away at first. I think we need to analyse and process things internally. I feel we weren’t really in the game for the first 20 minutes; our pressing wasn’t good, and we let Dynamo play their way out too easily. However, there were also spells where we pinned Dresden back and had them exactly where we wanted them. We need to have a discussion about intensity, our pressing triggers, and perhaps our tactical approach to pressing, so that we don’t concede an early goal again in future matches.“
„Dresden scored one more goal than we did, and when that happens, it’s always difficult to get a point. We were pulled apart in the middle for the goal we conceded. That really frustrates me, because we’ve let in goals in that same manner quite a few times before. After conceding, it was extremely tough playing against a team that moves the ball so well and has a clear game plan. Still, we stayed calm and didn’t lose our heads, which I think was very positive. The sending-off effectively killed the game off, of course. In terms of the scoreline, the match remained open until the end, though it didn’t feel that way after the red card.“
