„Didn’t lose our heads after falling behind early“

After the international break, Darmstadt 98 returned to the Bölle with a home win! Against Energie Cottbus, SV Darmstadt 98 put on a spirited performance in front of their home crowd and rewarded themselves with three points after an intense match. We've compiled the post-match reactions for you here:

Florian Kohfeldt:

„The initial situation and the goal we conceded obviously resulted from poor defending. With Marco, we could have found the right response shortly after. After that, it took us 20 minutes to regroup. That had a lot to do with the midfield and our overall play, but that’s not a criticism at all. I want to give Nico special praise today. He completely put the team first. Playing this position at 19 deserves great respect. Despite the visitors‘ chances, we remained solid. We sat here three days ago and talked a lot about frustration tolerance. I think we more than demonstrated that today.

In the second half, just when that square of Vuko, Paddy, Hiro, and Kai finally gelled, things started clicking for the first time this season. I think you could see that this combination of possession and control, quick transitions, and structured, organised defending worked for almost 45 minutes for the first time in the second half. I’m happy about that because I knew the lads had it in them.“ We have. But we also had to prove it. We managed to do that today, against a very exciting opponent, in my opinion, who has great attacking movement and is extremely difficult to defend against. Accordingly, I am absolutely delighted with this home win, which we absolutely deserved, especially because of the second half.“

Claus-Dieter Wollitz:

„We started the game very well and scored the first goal with our first chance. After that, we had to defend against some of the hosts‘ attacks, but we also created two or three chances of our own. However, the equaliser opened up the game again, which turned the tide of the match. At halftime, we resolved to play more boldly and with more organisation in the second half. Instead, we made the pitch too big. A mistake then led to a corner kick, which is where Darmstadt excels. We hoped to create another good opportunity after that, but we didn’t manage it. The shots on our goal were no problem for Schuhen, who is a good goalkeeper. There was definitely more we could have achieved if we had made it 2-0. If you don’t take your chances up front, you can’t afford to make mistakes at the back. That’s why we deservedly lost 3-1 in the end.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„Yannik’s goal was crucial for us; otherwise, the final minutes would have been even more uncomfortable. He joined the attack, put it away, and that speaks volumes about how he did everything right in that moment. It was a difficult and chaotic game. We knew we’d find spaces we hadn’t had in recent weeks. We didn’t have as much of that space in the second half because they made some adjustments, but we remained patient. Especially at the beginning, it was a bit of a rollercoaster. Cottbus’s results from last week also showed that they usually go all-in. Despite conceding an early goal, we didn’t lose our heads. That was the key to our success today. We’re aware of our position in the table, but we’re still taking it one game at a time. This was a very important win for us. Especially now, it’s about getting points by points by points and staying in contention.“

Aleksandar Vukotić:

„It’s a shame that I always seem to have to make a mistake to get into the game… I definitely need to work on that. For me, how I react after a mistake is crucial. They’re usually simple errors that just can’t happen at this level. I’ll do everything I can to go into every game with the right focus from the first minute. Cottbus had good chances in the first half that could have decided the game. We, on the other hand, took our chances. It was important for our confidence and for the whole team. We’re almost a completely different team than last year, but we have a lot of quality in the squad. Despite the past few weeks, it’s important to emphasise that this process takes time. I’m positive and I believe in this team.“

Opposition Check: Energie Cottbus

For the very first time, Energie Cottbus will play an away match at the Böllenfalltor this Saturday (October 10th). The team from Lusatia had to wait twelve years to return to the 2. Bundesliga. Now, their journey takes them to Darmstadt for the first time. This was made possible by Jannis Boziaris, whose goal in Regensburg on the final matchday fired Cottbus back into Germany's second-highest division. Yet the path there began long before that.
