The match at the Böllenfalltor stadium began energetically, but the visitors got off to the better start: After a long ball, Justin Butler capitalised on a defensive lapse by Darmstadt and slotted the ball past Marcel Schuhen to give Cottbus an early lead on 4 minutes. Darmstadt looked for an immediate response. Patric Pfeiffer played Marco Richter through, whose shot went wide just two minutes later.
Both teams continued to create chances. After a cross from Noah Weißhaupt, Milan Smit initially missed the target, before Lee’s follow-up shot sailed over the bar with 14 minutes on the clock. At the other end, on 20 minutes, Schuhen made a brilliant save to deny Butler’s header and prevent a second goal. Five minutes later, it was Darmstadt’s turn again: A cross from William Mikelbrencis found Richter at the far post, who took the ball acrobatically but put it wide. Cottbus also remained dangerous: Schuhen was on hand to save both a central long-range shot from Tolcay Cigerci after 26 minutes and a Butler shot in the 33rd minute.
Then Darmstadt’s attacking efforts were rewarded: Ho-jae Lee was played through with a long ball and cut it back from the byline to Weißhaupt, who slotted home to make it 1-1 in the 36th mintue. The equaliser gave the home side an extra boost.
Darmstadt continued to press and created another chance in the 38th minute through Richter. Shortly afterward, Pfeiffer tried his luck with a shot on the turn, but his effort went just wide with 5 minutes of the half remaining. Darmstadt were thus pushing for the go-ahead goal in the closing stages of the first half.
After the break, the visitors initially had more of the game. However, it was again the visitors who registered the first shot on goal, Copado’s dipping effort testing Schuhen, 8 minutes into the half. Darmstadt weren’t sitting back either and continued to create promising opportunities. As in the first half, both teams were looking to score. I
n the 68th minute, Darmstadt had a golden opportunity to make it 2-1: Lotka could only parry a cross forward, and Richter fired a shot from a central position, but his effort went over the bar. Shortly afterward, Duijvestijn drove the ball down the field, and Lotka dived deep to meet his powerful low shot with a quarter of an hour remaining. Just seconds later, he made a brilliant save, clawing a Weißhaupt header off the line. From the ensuing corner, the deadlock was broken: Vukotic headed the ball into the net to make it 2-1.
But that wasn’t the end of it. In the 87th minute, Darmstadt combined well down the left flank. Petretta’s pass into the penalty area found Lührs, who finished clinically to make it 3-1. No further significant scoring chances arose in the closing stages, securing Darmstadt’s second consecutive home victory. After the 7th matchday, the South Hessians have seven points and occupy 13th place in the table, at least until tomorrow noon.
